My 9-3 Aero is overheating, redhot under the bonnet, engine malfunction light is on and I'm in limp home mode.
Coolant is still there Fan comes on as it should then goes off Heater blows hot Radiator is COLD Chanaged thermostat PAS Fluid is cooking stopping my powersteering from working Temp gauge is half way No mayo in cap
Do you reckon its thermostat, water pump or head gasket?
Cheers

Does the gauge go beyond halfway at all?

No stays in the middle mate, thats why I didnt realise it was over heating untill the light came on and I had a look, I could smell a heat smell if you know what I mean but just thought it was because its been stood tbh

You could have a leak. In some cars it can be a low level warning light. I guess when you say heat smell you are referring to the smell of warmed coolant?

hi, if it's the thermostat the temp gauge would go up, you could do a comp test to check the head gasket, if you haven't got one take the header tank cap off and see if the level goes up and down or if bubbles come to the surface. Is the rad getting hot? guess you checked the waterpump drive belt, you may have an air lock somewhere.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Changed the thermostat last night, water was rusty and had white deposits.
Drove it 10 miles and its not really overheating now, although it does get hot, cant "smell" the heat like yesterday though NO issues at all with driving, starts first turn of the key and the heater blows hot and cold.
The fan comes on on start up, then goes off, then comes back on again but it doesnt stay on, could this be the problem? fan relay, temp sensor or something?
BTW it didnt lose any coolant, only lost some last night obviously when I changed the thermostat, no bubbling in the header tank etc.

Hi Dave,
I believe (and I could be wrong) that you've got two temperature senders in the engine bay. One drives the gauge on the dashboard, and another goes directly to the ECU. You may well find that the ECU one is playing up.
Note: I could be talking rubbish, but I'm sure I read that somewhere. Possibly the UKSaabs forum.

Rich

Hi Rich
You're not talking rubbish mate, I think the ECU one is near the fuel rail and the gauge one is next to the thermostat.
Took the battery off and the CEL light has resetted itself, what you reckon guys, thermostat caused the problem?
Surely if it was still overheating and it was possibley the headgasket then the engine light would still be on?

O.k so now the power steering fluid is cooking, engine is still getting very hot but radiator is cold??
Top hose is hot, bottom hose is warm, heater blows hot air.
Radiator and fans? Or is gas in the coolant system?
Cheers

Blocked rad?
|
|
To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

i'd try flushing the rad. take it off and stick a pressure washer through it, same goes for any of the coolant hoses off the engine.

water pump impellers falled/rusted off ? run it up and check for flow in the header tank ? or take a hose off and rev it, no spurt = remove the pump, squirt = look elsewhere

You think its the rad then?
I've got a spare rad and fan which are gwo so I can swap them over, just not sure if gas is in the coolant system due to HGF but its not in the red or steaming, it is hot though and as said the radiator is cold.
Hopefully a rad and fan change cures the problem, what a ballache, merry christmas...

Merry christmas to you too bud.
As has been said, it sounds like the coolant isn't flowing around the system which would be either thermostat, waterpump or a blockage. You've done the 'stat so I'd rule that out.
You said the coolant was rusty and had flaky stuff in it, now I'm not sure if these have a plastic water pump or metal but as said above the blades could have rusted and corroded to the point where it's hardly moving any coolant or the system could be blocked by the flaky bits.
I'd flush or swap the rad as you have a spare but I'd check the old one either way, just pour some water in it and see how long it takes to come out the bottom, it should flow more or less straight through. I'd also take the water pump off and inspect it, it should be obvious if it's fecked.

Thanks for the help guys.
Found the problem...
Radiator has a small leak, thats why I wasnt properly overheating, but thanks to Saabs money making design fault the PAS line runs right underneath and isnt silicone coated, so over time not only has it rusted but the hot leak has been boiling the fluid...
Got all the parts BUT going to need to repair the PAS line or replace it.
I'll start another thread.
Cheers again
