A mate of mine is having trouble with his polo, when he's on the motorway/high speed his car doesnt want to go over 65/70 as if its holding back?
He's cleaned the fuel filter out as its full of wibblepoo but still no better.
Runs fine on tick over and lower speeds???
anybody?

1300 on a K will be singlepoint or multi if its a gt.. injected either way.. they arnt amazingly quick cars.. i remember a mk3 singlepoint i had for all of a week, Realy slow.. but my carbed mk2 was quicker. 65/70 is very slow though... blocked injector?

its carbed so he says.
Its not a case of a slow polo as no worries before. He says its as if he hits a gust of wind when when he gets to 70.
My mk3 was a 1 litre and had no probs getting up to and past 70.

If its carbed and his fuel filter was full of curse word it could be some muck stuck in a jet. Have you stripped the carb?

They love to rot the filler neck in front of the rear wheel which then puts a whole load of poo into the tank.

You say the filter was full of rubbish. May it is worth replacing it with a new item (even a cheapo from the likes of Halfords on trade . If it comes with a cat what is that like? Any knocks coming from under the car?

Chances are if it's the carbed model that the jets are blocked. It works on a multi jet system. One for idle and others for the fueling at higher revs. That's why they are a pain to tune too.
Take the carb of and clean it out. Probably have enough rust in it to re-build the battery tray that no doubt has rusted away too

unless its been modded it will be spi, which people often wrongly call a carb for some reason. i would check the condition of the exhuast. I had one become blocked on a polo gt i had, and that wouldnt get past 65mph either. pulled the tailpipe off the rotten backbox, removed its innards and proceeded to drive the car that way for around 6 months pretending i was doing a rally stage!

check the breather pipe at the back of the engine, mine had rotted through and ran bloody awful, if it would start at all, swapped it for a length of heater hose and it aint missed a beat since (touches wood )
