Yet another strange problem with my dub, so I'm here with questions once more The heater is nice and hot but only works on one setting. I switch it to one and two- nothing, once I switch it to 3 (windscreen) it comes on. The heater motor sounds a bit squeaky and noisy but is nice and hot. I've replaced the switch as it was the cheapest and easiest. Now, As seen in my high beam thread, my electrical knowledge is disgraceful so any advice would welcomed.....again ;D

Heater resistor - It looks a bit like a cotton reel wound with wire, and it's usually either on the bulkhead or the side of the heater box (or both...). The two lower positions on the heater fan switch pass the motor feed through this to reduce the amount of current that the heater can draw, this is how it slows the speed. When it fails, the low speeds stop working, but the fast speed is fine because it is direct.
The motor is noisy because the motor is falling off it's spindle, the bearings have siezed up or the fan is falling off the motor.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

So I need a resistor and a new motor? Time to search eBay! Thanks for the advice, really appreciated

the resister is on the metal plate that the power plug for the motor goes into theres a thermal fuse diode thing on there that costs 30p from maplin but I cant remember the part number I got the part no from a corrado forum ages ago found it wiki.the-corrado.net/fan_speed_thermal_fuse_repair.html

at least the motor is easy to get out on a mk2 golf! 3 bolts around the edge, pulls out the side of the box iirc. Not like some things (Land rover discovery, I'm looking at you) where you have to strip the whole dash.

its even easier than that on the mk2 just lift a tab and twist and its out you might get away with oiling the bearing throgh the bottom when its out to stop it being noisy there is a gromit on the bottom of the motor body pop that out and oil the bearing and give it a whirl as always worked for me

hm.. position 1 on my Passat doesn't work, It doesn't really bother me, but if it turns out to be that easy to fix I may well take a look at it sometime soon. Although I doubt it's quite the same system, as the fans got 4 positions, and only ones stopped working.
Edit, thinking about it, each position must have it's own resistor to get different speeds, so just one position not working would indicate that it's the resistor and not a thermal fuse. Does that sound right to the more knowledgeable chaps?

Does that sound right to the more knowledgeable chaps? most likly the switch contacts as if I remeber right the passatt has the big fan switch try pulling the front of the switch in position 1 and pokin the brass plate to see if it works then just one thermal fuse does all the slower speeds

Changed the thermal fuse today and.........still only works on one setting. I'm assuming the resistor is knackered. On a brighter note, I oiled the motr and it's lovely and quiet on it's one setting
