Okay I was thinking about the cost of retro at the moment,.. and the fact it will probably start rising as the scene develops etc. I'm also thinking that I REALLY REALLY want to get racing/hillclimbing next year, so I need to focus back on that (ie stop offering me really nice but slightly unraceable cars ) ,... Also being on a budget these two things look to be mutially exclusive,.. unless I can find a suitable retro-ish car that is 100% solid and would make an interesting/good race car for less than £600,.. Thinking caps on,.. only proviso is that it won't need ANY welding, ideally with an MOT,.. and RWD is a little preferable,..

Could get a mint, late (G/H plate) Skoda Rapid for that and have cash left over to drop a meaty big lump in! With all that weight over the back end you have the perfect hillclimber!

LADA LADA LADA! ;D ;D ;D But seriously the Lada can be had for curse word all, is a great rally car with it's own engine and running gear, and you won't have the most trouble in the world changing stuff, and on top of that a fast Lada is the ultimate sleeper! FROM THIS... TO THIS! ;D

Funny you should say you want to get into Hillclimbing - since I tried Prescott Hill in my Peugeot, I'd like to get serious about it
I'd like to use my 600kg Datsun for such events, but you need a relatively lightweight car with loads of torque - and in its current pissy 988cc guise there's not much chance.
I reckon a solid Imp or Toyota starlet would be a great way to start.

Good call on the Starlet! Run it "as is" until you get bored / blow it up, then spend a few squids on a nice Pinto for it! Vroom vroom.

How about a fiat 127. 95-100 bhp from a 1300 GT race car, i know of a mental 1050cc version with 132BHP!

How about a Chevette or original Mazda 323? I suppose the hassle free and straight forward car would be a neat Mk1 or Mk2 Escort with a Fiat twin cam lump!

Have you seen that blue H.P.E (Harris) Pinto engined Starlet - probably the scariest thing i've seen with 4 wheels! It looks all innocent until the engine is started ;D Anyway, I love challenges like this & a common topic of conversation down the pub My suggestion is one of these... £600 won't buy a solid Mk1 XR2 but certainly a less sporty 1.3 is possible. I know its FWD but a ride with my mate in a newer shape (base model) Festa around Curborough sprint circuit really opened my eyes to both the car and my friend's abilities! Brilliant fun.

Saw it run at the 'Pod - frightening quick!! Might be worth checking out if its still available!

A well tuned Imp's a very handy car on the hills too, in part cause the car weighs very little (although it is very sturdy and safe considering a standard late Super Imp weighs around 675 kg, and even less with a cage and buckets in place of all that trim and sound deadening) partly cause the engine's so tunable and versatile, and weighs curse word all too, and partly because they don't have to do very much slowing down into corners due to their great handling, so your times on the hills would be good, as you could carry your speed all the way up the hills. And the traction's pretty impressive too, so there's no need for putting any other engine than an Imp 998 in.

capri, but I'm biased......forget being competitive.....you wanna have FUN!
Buy a knacker 1.6 with good bodywork for 3-400 then drop a 2.0is engine out of a sierra into it...
120 bhp, and RWD. Plenty of parts, plenty of following, and will actually make your budget of 600 quid!

You'll find a good tidy example of most of the cars posted so far for under £600, it's just a case of how far do you want to go with the mods, you wont bring any car up to full works Subaru basher spec for under £600, but a car like a Starlet, Imp or Skoda Rapid will be capable of keeping up with the comparitive competition for that money, as long as you buy smart. You won't get a concours car for this money, but a tidy road legal one is all you really need as a base car, isn't it?

well...i don't think youd find a tidy road going escort mk1/2 for 600quid....
Ive got a scooby (not works...but wrx) basher for less than £1200....and that was for a more expensive capri to start with.
You can see a very quick car for very little money if you know how.

this is an unusal suggestion.....but i was sat in the garage earlier on and was thinking about what is now my brothers car.
It used to be mine and is a pontiac fiero (yes i know, another yank) more or less the american version of the MR2...(most people say it copied the MR2 but its the other way round) Its a mid engined 2 seater, RWD made of plastic panels bolted to a galvenised spacefram chassis. Quite wide, and a good wheelbase...has a 2.5 liter 4 cyl engine and would make a very competitive car....it just handles so well, and is very very advanced for a 1984 car. All independent suspension, disks all round, and it aint heavy. Handled like a dream....and loads of tuning parts available...
Its quirky. its not a skoda rapid, and i think it would be very competitive.....whats more it cost me 200 quid! Insurance is more or less free on yanks, and it got 40 mpg...it also comes with american sturdiness, which is definitely a good thing.
perhaps an idea if you want something different,...and entertaining.

I wonder if it was ever homologated? Some events get very anal about official and genuine modifications, so imagine what they'll say about unofficial cars. But those of us who're not in the pay of Ecclestone (and his company of capitalist curse word who run motorsport like a financial venture and dilute it for the sake of money) love the idea!
