Can I sandblast scabby alloys? Will have I any wheel left after doing this? And if it works and I can then get a reasonable finish, what's the best way to seal the paint/shiny bit? Andy

It depends on the methods you use. If you got access to an enclosed sand blaster, then unless the media is band new you'll have issues with corrosion at a later date (steel and ally dusk don't play well). We've a soda blaster at work which is great for soft alloys, you want to pick the least aggressive abrasive you can that wont take ages to remove the finish. Crushed walnut shells are a good place to start.

This is starting to sound expensive, the thing I'm trying to avoid!
I've only really got the blokes round the corner who sandblast big bits of steel, in a big shed, so I guess that's a no then.
How much to pay one of these re-furb companies?

Depends on the size/finish. I priced it up at about £60 a corner from a place in Brum.

Try getting hold of some Dichloromethane (DCM or methylene chloride) to strip the paint off (takes seconds) then over with some sand paper then paint.
