Gearbox diagnosis is in. Layshaft is heavily worn and needs replacing :-( He is searching for a replacement. Also the bearings at each end of it are trashed so its getting a full new set!! So much for the "yeah its perfect mate" box I bought......
Question for ye. Should I replace the spigot bearing while its all apart?? For the sake of less than a tenner?

I've only ever taken them out of old crossflows and reused them. There only ever turning when you press the clutch. If you want to for peace of mind though it's cheap enough and easy enough to do. I remove them by pumping them full of grease and then hammering in an old spigot shaft and the grease pushes them out

I've heard that stuffing the hole full of bread and then hammering in a shaft does the trick. I don't know if thats wholemeal or white though.

I used to use the grease method but it is messy and does not always work if the bearing seals burst or bearing is well stuck. I now have a few "rawl" masonry anchors of varying diameters fitted with a longer bolt that goes through the expanding plug end, long enough to hit the rear of the crank and still pull the plug in enough to expand the wings against the bearing inner. Then wind the bolt in and the bearing will just pull/push out. Ooh, that's clever!

Wheres that red cavalier sri130 from? I think I've seen it in Carrick on shannon a fair few times? That blue mk6 escort rs2000 looks very similar to one that used to be in Boyle. Also I think that 2 door nova saloon is from Sligo?

I'm from Boyle. Joe Flynn used to have an rs2000 like that years ago but he sold it on, do you know who owns it?

I was down in Wexford for the weekend with the family and as we left on Sunday morning I saw all the classics arriving at the seafront. I left the town and stoped off at the Irish Heritage Museum and did the guided tour. At one point while the guide was giving his talk some of the classics went past on the road nearby bouncing their engines off the rev limiters. The guide was not impressed when he couldent make himself heard and made some remark about the "boy racers". The wife shot me the daggers but I had to laugh.

Still no gearbox!! However I happened upon a Corsa B, being broken, so I bought the steering column out of it cheap IMG_20190513_124627 by quickrack, on Flickr I've since cut or unbolted the bits I don't need off it. Fun!! I tried on the steering wheel and its a match. I'd heard its a bit hit n miss but mine fits fine. Yippee So. This week I will fit my new steering rack, that I've painted a few times, and power steering. IMG_20190518_204825 by quickrack, on Flickr IMG_20190518_204834 by quickrack, on Flickr Wish me luck. Last time I saw him was Mondello last summer, I think he ran a crank bearing.
