Hi. My daily is a '99 306 HDi. It needs a new gearbox and finding one in a breakers is proving tricky. What other models have this same box? Possibilities I would reckon might be 206 HDi and xsara HDi. Anyone know for certain if they are swappable or any other suggestions?

you CAN fit in the lower-specced XUD gearbox, but the 306 HDi gearbox, AFAIK, is the only one of its kind
The XUD gearbox would need the release arm from your current 'box fitting - the FD is lower on the XUD ones too, but no idea if they're interchangeable I'm afriad

Merde.
I wondered about the XUD, but if the FD is lower, then thats out of the question as its already loud and high revving on the motorway.
A citroen xsara hdi though......the engine looks identical.... seemingly the 306 and xsara are similar platforms...... Need to find one in a scrappy for look.

be very carefull when mixing 206 and 306 bexes , some one i know done one and the flywheel touched inside the box and cracked it , even though they looked identical there was a few very very minor differencess,.

I would be tempted to go with the Xsara HDi box out of your choices, otherwise keep hunting for a 306 HDi item. As said the XUD 'box was bad enough on the 1.9TDs for motorway work!

Are 406's different then? They'd seem like the obvious choice if they're compatible. Either the 2.0hdi, or the 2.1tdi sits at nice low revs on the motorway.
