recently bought a 1043 mk2 polo
before i changed the spark plugs the car ran great
now it wont turn over. turn the key and nothing happens at all.
help?:S lol
bear in mind i ent much of a mechanic

Ok, will have a go at Q & A to help you:
Do the ignition lights come on? Do they then dim / flicker or go out when you turn the key further to actually start the engine?
If no, no then you've either disconnected the battery or it's absolutely 100% flat (swap it for another temporarily to check). If yes, no then the solenoid that operates the starter is probably goosed (although from the sounds of it you'd have to be spectacularly unlucky if it worked fine before!). If yes, yes then the battery may be flat (but not totally discharged, charge it overnight then try again), or possibly the starter motor is probably jammed, rock the car backwards and forwards in 3rd or 4th gear hard to free it.

It is also possible that the ignition switch is faulty - old VWs seem particularly fond of losing the "start" position so if the dash lights come on but nothing happens when you try to start it could be that. Post a bit of a better description of what happnens, or even a quick youtube video can really help track it down.
Do you own a multimeter? If not go buy a cheap one - the yellow £10 "household tester" types that you find in Maplin/Supermarkets/market stalls etc are fine for what you need to do.

cheers guys, looks like a faulty battery is all. charged it and its fine, but doesnt hold its charge at all. thanks for your help anyway  |
