Yeah, you'd never of moved them with a bar on the crank pulley. I'm not an expert on engines but it might be wise to replace either the pistons and/or liners that were stuck. I'd hate for them to seize again after you've reassembled the engine I think I'll just replace the rings. The pistons and liners (once cleaned) don't actually touch each other so should be fine. Am interested in your Consul GT but couldn't find a thread on it

Thanks Foxy, I didn't do a thread on any of my cars yet lol. When I rebuilt the brakes and got the Consul back on the road I posted a few pics on the Mk1 drivers guild FB page. Happy to send you a few pics on private message if you like. Won't post here, coz I don't wanna hijack your v12 thread

There you go: Are you busy cleaning the v12 pistons and liners now?

There you go: Are you busy cleaning the v12 pistons and liners now? awesome You must've read my mind as I just posted about the cleaning while you posted that lol. I've asked this question before but still don't really understand it... Why was the Consul name used in the Mk1 Granada line-up? I totally get it with the Zephyr/Zodiac thing as the Consul was lowest of the pecking-order with trim and engines but it seems the Consul Granada was a sort of top of the range Sport version Were the interiors more basic than the 3.0 Granada (GXL/Ghia) perhaps?

Yeah the interior of a Consul is basic compared to the Granada. The range went: Consul, Consul L, Consul GT, Granada XL, Granada GXL. In 1975 they were all rebadged Granada, The GT becoming Granada S, and the range topper becoming Granada Ghia Those 2 pistons you cleaned came out a treat The only downside of a v12 is there is another 10 to go - ouch!

Ah I see. Yeah the pistons came up good for a preliminary clean. Still to do the grooves. I'm doing a couple a night in between work commitments. Broke 2 of the middle rings the other night so might as well break them all now lol. Was intending to get new rings anyway but for some reason wanted to get them all out intact. Once all the cleaning is done I'll be moving on to the 'biggie' which is getting the 5 seized head-studs out. I'll not give anything away yet lol but am well tooled-up

A piece of broken piston ring is an excellent tool to clean the groves in the pistons
Keep up the good work! Peter

Peter I found a seal pick invaluable to break up the carp i found in mine, as well as a cunning grind on a ring end. the pistons I did spent atleast 30 mins in the sonic bath at 80deg about a week before I cleaned the grooves out, aiming for 2 a day was an achievable goal, as i found it sooooo boring. Nice work love the car. Dan

How far into the block do the head studs go? Just thinking, you could possibly saw off the studs close to the block face, centrally drill into the remaining stubs and use Eazi-outs or similar to extract them. Failing that, gradually increase the drill size until you're near to the width of the stud thread, and extract the remainder with a tap & die and maybe some compressed air to clear out the block threads...

As someone who just finished reading this whole thread over maybe a month, on and off..
Can confirm he has tried an ez out, and drilling the centre's out, either on this block or on the bike one.
Good on you for persevering! Hasn't really put me off wanting a Jag at some stage, at least we don't have to worry about the damp here. Shipping parts from the UK is my biggest fear.

fascinating experiment !
re easy outs , before they get the thing out they tend to snap , then you get a cobalt drill to drill the easy out...e.r...out , and that snaps , then you drill all around the whole mess , and end up making a m6 into a m10 hole , like my fs1e moped when i was 16...not that i have baggage at all.

general reply re easy-outs.... they never work If they wont come out with a 3" bar and six-point socket (huge leverage) I am 99.9% sure I'd end up with a bigger mess by using (brittle) easy-outs. The studs are about 2" into the block: 1" threaded and 1" shaft corroded in block

Spark erosion is the way to get stubborn studs or broken easy outs out! A machinist friend did this for me on the occasions l needed it. Maybe there is somewhere local to you offering spark erosion? It's not wildly expensive and a totally safe method. Chemicals always seem so messy to me......

It's not wildly expensive and a totally safe method. Chemicals always seem so messy to me...... the logistics of spark-erosion or any kind of milling/drilling by an engineering shop aren't viable. How are they going to get a lump like that on their table or drill-press? I also had a disastrous experience of spark-erosion by a company a couple of miles from me. The idiot decided rather then spark-erode it as I'd asked (Hillman Imp kingpin bolt) he drilled it out squint and ruined the wishbone and patted himself on the back for managing to 'keep a bit of the thread' in the wishbone - which was never threaded I'm happy with chemicals as they do their work cheaply and slowly without getting people involved who need to make money. Anyway I've been getting more advice on the central-heating forum and back down to earth with a bit of a bump as a couple of the guys pointed out that the Alum will surely attack the heather element too. So now I need to find a way of isolating the element from the alum. am thinking could put it in Pyrex jar with clean water in it and heat should still transfer to the alum mix
