Bloody hell, some progress there chap, having a rolling chassis is a big mojo plus ;D Like the idea of the fabricated and removable front suspension assy its very easy just to weld stuff on but try and cut it off when you find you have to move something I would like to have some wishbones made with adjustment later similar to caterham stuff. Keep up the good work

Looking good. Any improvements that can be done to a Herald chassis can only be a good thing! I'm also looking at making some adjustable wishbones for the front ed at some point Thanks Speedy. Braking loads on suspension produce higher loads than cornering so bigger bushes are a must especially with your new brakes. I got a complete set of front Nolathane MX5 bushes out of the states landed for about 120 quid (240NZ$). I'm using the adjustable inner bolts from my MX donor car on the bottom A and washers to adjust the Top A back or fwd to help with adjusting caster.

Keep up the good work Thanks Rob, I'll post photos of the new Suspension when I get them. Progress has been swift lately but now will slow again until more parts arrive. Going to fit rear sway bar and look at steering connections as some machining required here. I haven't seen any new photos from you mate-how's it going-winter is on the way and we know what that does to motovation.

Hi Rob,
"Sway Bar" is much easier to say but does sound a little silly now that you mention it. "
I'm not sure what the "Stang" engine is but it's getting replaced with some light weight race engine soon apparently.

Good progress Sir! Looking forward to seeing your front suspension come together! Must feel good to have the engine and 'box in now! Thanks Em, Frank here. Yeah starting to get excited about getting a rolling chassis. More money to spend on the front but once the front suspension is done that will be a big amount of the major setup Fab work done. I have discovered that I will need to remake my Hubs. My own fault as I didn't do my home work well enough. They say you learn from your mistakes and in this case it's true. I need to have hubs with the flanges about 40mm further inboard and this will give me a good Scrub Radius and help with all the other suspension and steering requirements. The other hubs would have worked but it would not have been Ideal. I'm looking forward to seeing more pic's on your progress

Nice set up Frank especially with the motor hidden behind the dash, you're fitting the MX5 heater as well from what l can remember Not sure why Em called me Frank but I've been called worse so I'll roll with it. Yeah that's right -Heater & Fan unit inside as well if it all works. This MX5 is the Car that just keeps giving. Surprisingly pleased how well the Wipers seem to be working out. Let hope the rest fitd as well. You did a great job on yout bonnet Rob. Got it fitted up yet.

Ingenious work on the wipers there Frank!
Should be good to have a modern set up rather than the antiquated standard arrangement. With the MX5 heater as well, you should be pretty much weather-proof!

Lexus axle on left & MX5 Axle on right Hybrid Lexus/MX5 before welding. This will need to be shortened another 85mm first. Hybrid axles welded together ready to re-assemble Finished axles ready for install The axle angle at full droop Axle angle at normal ride height Axle angle at full Compression. The axle still turns at that angle without any clicking or roughness and still floats in & out OK Near side axle fitted Offside axle fitted

nice updates again. obviously it would be nice if the drive shaft were straight at normal ride height, but it wont be as bad if the missalignment is only in 1 plain, if that makes sense ? i.e the hub isnt forward or rearward of the gearbox, aswell as higher. even if it were, the worse that will happen is cv's wear out quicker or overheat/fail

At least the CV balls will get a nice little journey up and down the races. This will mean they don't wear one spot but they may create a bit more heat I'd say. They are also angling back a little from the Diff- another compromise. The outside CV's are designed for a V8 Lexus so I think these may do the distance. The inside MX5 one's are common and easy to replace. I can get the axles out without removing the hub or diff which is a real bonus. It not a daily driver so I think I'll be OK. As Em & Rob have found these custom builds offer plenty of room for lateral thinkers.

Front brakes-Plan C After thinking I was going to redo my front hubs this is the solution to one or two problems. The Disc rotor has now been moved inside the hub flange and set with an alloy spacer. The Calipers now align with the mounting holes and a simple adapter plate now holds them. The disc's are bolted back through the spacers and into the hubs. The inside of the disc rotor was machined to centre around the inner hub. The bonus is I have reduced my scrub radius to about 50mm and given myself heaps of brake caliper clearance. I can get 16in wheels on the front and later will check and see if 16in will fit the back. It's the back brake calipers that are dictating what on there now-It will be close.

I found this vitesse when I sold my wiper arms to the guy that owns this little gem. It use to be a race car so the previous only needed one wiper. I think its the 2.5 motor with carbs off a 3.8 Jag. Datsun 180b diff and willwood brakes. Koni Shocks. The owner says it got about 180HP and frightens small Japanese cars He's still developing it and needs to sort out the clearance on the front fenders.
