I started a thread over on retro riders but incase anyone fancies a look heres a summary.. Looking on gumtree I came across a chinese 125 for £200. Rang the guy, he said it was a runner etc so I went to look. It wouldnt run and had a few issues, so I offered £100 and he accepted. Anyway its a 2006 and its a confusing model, It is made by Jiangmen Better Motorcycle co and is a BT125-20, but on the front it say X-stream and the tank says crusader classic?? hmm Anyways, I got her back home and cleaned the carb, and re-made the connectioon to the coil and she started up lovely. So good times for me ;D I wasnt a fan of the look of the bike, and the tank was too big etc etc so ive decided to bob it on a low budget. Ill post some pics now, as we say, a thread is useless without them. After some stripping.. One of the seats I may use.. after attacking it with the angle grinder and welder.. So this is how she stands as of yesterday. The welding wire ran out, so ill try do some more today. Ive got my eye on a few nice small tanks for it, the original is naff! Ive cheated on hardtailing her too, kept the rear swingarm, and cut and bent the frame down to make the hardtail up. Like I said,, budget build

Right quick update. I bought a Honda MTX125 for £60 as it had engine issues. Here she is: And after half hour: The misses bought me an early xmas present too! Well i decided i wanted my bike to have spoked wheels and not the alloy ones it was on, so used the MTX wheels and knobblies. I love that look on a bobber, think it gives it a more aggressive look. I also bought a new tank from ebay, not sure what its off, but my mate who does airbrushing is going to paint some hotrod style flames in it. Anyway here is a pic of her lightly mocked up and things are just resting. Better pics to come later...

Tank needs work but otherwise its getting there, that horrible lump of alloy the exhaust is dangling from doesn't help though. Needs minimal niceities too, loose those huge clocks and headlight lugs....
Let me guess the MTX had lost 2nd gear?

Yeah the tank is getting painted with hotrod flames, and it also needs widening, to clear a bit on the frame. The clocks are going, but the headlight lugs are staying as I have another headlight on the way. Secondly the exhausts are getting chopped so the big alloy brackets are going anyway. As for the mtx engine, the stator etc had issues and fell apart and mangled everything.

chinese bikes annoy me, they often look quite nice but the quality is generally rubbish (well it is on the ones Ive had anyway) however that makes them perfect for something like this where pretty much everything is replaced...I'm liking this project

yeah i would never have a standard chinese bike. the engine is a beauty though, runs lovely and pulls hard! I also have a early honda c90, and a 60's c100 project with a 125 engine.

Agreed, I've got a Chinese 125 with a CG clone engine. The engine itself is strong and always fires up, the bike is let down by cheap fixtures & fittings from what I've seen. As stuff breaks it's replaced with a 'better' fitting than the original. A bit of general maintenance and TLC always helps too...........Undecided what to do with my Chinese bike, was hoping to five it a make over but saving money for my test.....Might just leave it in the shed for that odd afternoon when I've got nothing to do (which isn't often)

Now for sale, ive found a Vespa which is so much more me and its taxed and motd. So this is up for grabs, i want back what it owes me which is £250, i think this is well worth it, even if someone buys it to break, the engine is sound, the wheels are perfect, the seat is brand new in the packaging too. Thanks
