hi all, my old man has just bought a 1957 f3 alfa dana which is based in sweden in the south of the country. rather than get it shipped i thought it would be fun to go pick it up. i will be doing this before the end of january so is it going to be super cold? done a bit of research but has anyone any real life experience? currently I'm thinking ferry to(dover-calais) france, belgium, germany ferry to denmark and across the BRIDGE to sweden. anyone know the best place to book ferrys? do i need to book the short hop from germany to denmark? any help or advice greatly recieved. thanks in advance jim this is what I'm going to get; this is what I'm going to get it in;

I drive to sweden every year, we always go DFDS Harwich to Esjberg in Denmark, 4 hour scoot along the motorway and youre in Sweden. You can also go on the cargo boat Tilbury to Gothenburg

A road trip to get an awesome racing car - I am well jealous.
What's the reason behind the ferry to Germany? To let you get a rest from driving?
If you can get the ferry to Ijmuiden from the UK, that will see you landing about nine hours from southern Sweden after some rest on the ferry.

I drove to the Gatebil festival in Norway last year from Glasgow via Ijmuiden then the Nurburgring in my Zetec'd Mk4 Escort Estate. Great trip! Went mostly by land on the way there (over the Swedish bridge which I think was about 40 euros toll?). Not that hard a drive if you break it up too. On the way back I got the ferry to Germany, as I was insanely knackered after Gatebil (look here for the reason why: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.153924544653623.25077.129646027081475&type=3 ), and it was no problem at all. Really simple, just roll up and pay about 100 euros, which is probably the same or cheaper than what would be spent on the bridge and petrol, plus you get a break. Def don't get it shipped, go get it yourselves! ;D Roadtrips are one of the best bits about being into cars after all!

It was the Puttgarden-Rodby ferry I got on the way back. Only takes about an hour, but chops out a huge chunk of driving.

When you say cargo boat, you mean you can drive a car on and off? Any info on this also would be much appreciated!

Yes, you can drive a car on , its mainly used by lorries so isnt as posh as the regular boat. You get a cabin and meals inc but theres no fancy bar etc. 36 hour crossing twice a week IIRC

You need winter tires. This is not a "its best to have them on snow" but a necessity, as its illegal not to have winter tires, and the fines are -BIG- if you don't have them.

A mate and I drove from Trondheim in Norway to Cambridge in the UK and back in 4 days - that's 5500kms in 4 days So this should be doable by you and your dad. But make sure to have winter tires or else you might get into serious problems - fines, ditches etc ;D Ferry between Putgarten and Rødby you only need to show up, no advanced booking needed. The road down from the ferry terminal in Putgarten would be great in that racer

Strictly speaking it's not illegal if you are from the UK, but a set of snow chains must be carried by law. BUT- Having done just that, I would really, really, really recommend fitting winter tyres. I thought "Yeah I should get them, but I'm on a budget and I have chains." I was wrong, and spent ages with numb hands faffing with chains, feeling a tit while everyone was tucked up in their cozy Volvos. Probably thinking "****ing tourists". As for ditches, digging an 18 foot camper van out of one ain't fun. Edit- Will the car go on the Caddy or a trailer? The toll for the bridge is quite high for large vehicles (around 70 euros for our van 2 years ago) so may also be high if towing a trailer?

Strictly speaking it's not illegal if you are from the UK, but a set of snow chains must be carried by law. You completely sure about that? I remember reading about some people going unintentionally off road in sweden, with summer tires in the winter, I seem to remember the fine being something along 1000 pounds per 10km from the border they were.... (they were 40 km into sweden, 4000 pound fine ) Or I remember wrong, and that was for caravans No matter though, if you go to sweden to pick up something that size, on summer tires, in the winter, I believe the term is "you bloody w@nker" ;D Edit: Read up on the rules.. Since Dec. 2009, any car driving in sweden, no matter the country, are required to have winter tires. If you are towing, the hanger needs winter tires too

yep you need winter tyres, the cops are pretty good at getting non swedish plated cars on this-big fine too. Ive driven from sweden to london loads of times-quickest time ive done it in is 17 hours. i normally get the ferry from Putgarten and Rødby, saves time.

I can't comment on Sweden but I did go to Norway once to fetch a car (my '62 Bluebird) in November and without winter tyres it was tough going. The main roads were fine but anything off of a main road is just compacted snow and ice. No fun when pulling a trailer! I would have been fine but a major road closure meant a huge diversion down small minor roads. I managed to keep out of ditches although I did crash through a row of metal bollards at one point when I hit some sheet ice and just couldn't stop! I don't think I'd ever attempt a winter car rescue from there again unless I could drive it back... on snow tyres! Here's my inappropriate car haulage setup from that trip...

allready got winter tyres for car and trailer. the headgasket is abit suspect on the caddy now so were gonna put the snow tyres on my dads audi and take that instead. a little bit more boring but I guess alot more comfortable (dads retired now so likes his comfort) sounds like it might be an idea to take a shovel aswell?

southern sweden won't be too cold... put winter tyres on though, obligation in Germany.. cheapest ferries are Dover-Dunkirk with DFDS for the channel crossing. for the crossing to denmark/ sweden you have 2 options 1 is Travemunde Trelleborg with www.ttlines.de they can workout very cheap and when you take a night ferry you skip a Hotel night. other one is www.scandlines.dk, you could book but not necessary, the route is Puttgarden- Rodby
