might very well be a stupid question but....
what's the implications of machining a wheel bolt? either nipping a bit off the length with a grinder or what i'm pondering which is sticking some 'bubble' taper bolts in a lathe and cutting a 60 taper on them?
gracias por favor.

Well, they weren't made by magic so probably saw a lathe at some point in the past.... Not likely to be a problem as long as you machine them right and don't take too much metal off and weaken them. If I could buy nice new ones off the shelf for my application I'd probably to that myself though.

I'd say its ok as long as you don't get too much heat in them

Taken a bit off many a bolt for clearance before. I would tend to put them in a vice and go through with a cutting disc though - less heat generated.

just as a have a couple of sets of longer bubble taper bolts which i will never use and a need for some 60 tapered ones - so a bit of time and i can reuse rather than buying a new set. cheers for the answers.

heat will do nothing to them. if we get a truck in at work that needs the brakes doing but the wheel nuts wont budge, we heat them till just cherry red and then they come off if the inch air gun
