ive got a 1997 VW T4 van which ive converted into a camper, using a correct 3 seater rear seat from a caravelle with a middle lap belt.
now its in I'm thinking about seat belts for the other 2 seats ie the outside ones.
now lap belts would be easy but ive got a few questions, am I allowed them? are they actually safe?
if I'm not allowed them and ive got to go 3 point belts can I use non inertia ones so I can use the existing seat belt anchor points on the seat base and have welded to the frame a top mount too

If you've got the caravelle seat in the "normal" place, then there are mounts built in the shell to take an inertia reel belt - The reel down at the bottom, and the pivot up top. Neither hole is threaded, if I remember correctly, but just put a nut/spreader plate on the back (a quid or so off ebay).
The "proper" seatbelts supplied by VW for use in the rear of a caravelle are pretty much identical to the ones used in the front of a T25, which cost about £25/30 a pair. Probably easier to source since the caravelle rear seats go for silly money sometimes.
Personally I don't like lap belts at all. I've seen crash dummy videos and read enough about them to put me off.
As for legality, I'm not 100% sure either way. We've bought a few t4s which came with professionally installed crew seating in the back, and they had lap belts for all 6 passengers.

My MOT man allways said if it's a commercial or a camper and NOT a minibus anything behind the front seats is not tested? my crew cab recovery had no belts at all in the rear and he never even looked in there?

My MOT man allways said if it's a commercial or a camper and NOT a minibus anything behind the front seats is not tested? my crew cab recovery had no belts at all in the rear and he never even looked in there? That's what I thought, a mate of mine added extra seats in the back of his T2 camper (1971) with no belts, MOT man said the same thing. I would have thought a T4 would have the necessary anchor points already fitted at the factory as some were made into minibuses (?)

I'm pretty sure that 1997 vans (transit etc) came with 3 point seat belts all across all seats. I would be very surprised if you be allowed anything but full 3 point inertia reel belts in the front of the van. Does it have air bags in the dash? If so I think you are also supposed to have pretensioners on the floor of the inertias to 'pull' you back from the air bag.
Sorry. Can of worms maybe?

not looking at front, rear only, don't really want inertia as they are too big and ive fitted it all out now but forgot about the belts, think I'm going 3 point static belts for the rear eventually
