Quick question.
I need to get me MGB roadster resto shell on its side to strip underseal and then rustproof and re coat etc.
I see lots of pictures of guys on here doing it with tyres and matresses on the floor, but I have not seen how its done.
By this I mean, we have removed the engine, axle front suspension etc, the unboltable wings, and doors.
But when it goes on its side won't the weight damage the side panels of the car (being the rear quarters) even with the mattress and tyres down?

I always wondered this... nobody really seems to have much in the way of problems, but surely the panels would become dented?

I must admit it would be handy to know how to do this as I got to redo mine and its not much fun on the floor.

I leave the far side wheels on, then tip it using an engine crane. Its relatively easy to do -but ensure there are a couple of stacked tyres strategically placed against the pillars (- not the centre of an unsupported panel). Also have a range of stout pit props ready. You don't want it going too far- hence the engine crane staying attached, but you need to ensure it doesnt roll back -hence the props.
Once you've done it once- it becomes easy.
No -I've never dented a panel -but have restricted 'rollovers' to heavier 60's cars.

my uncle used to run a tow rope over the top of the car, with padding on the roof to prevent damage, then attatch it to the chassis and use his other car to pull the rope, pulling the car up.... he just used logs and old tyres incase it went too far... but it never did look 'safe'

Yup -absolute brilliant if you've stripped the car.
If you've barely removed the fuel & battery however, leaving the running gear intact -its too heavy..
Hence the rollover.

Yes it completely stripped of all running gear and engine , interior its just the shell, the wings are off adn the doors so it only the rear quarters that will come inot contact with the tryes and matress when I put it on its side, thise are the area I am concenred would get dented.

Suspend it then between 2 engine cranes, strapped around the ends of the chassis

Only got 1 lol!
So plan is to attahce dengine crane to the sill prob via some strap round the middle of the car and punp it up on its side so its just gently resting on the mattress and tyres, cheers for all the advice guys!

Have you got an engine stand? If all the running gear is removed you could make a bracket to fit across the engine mounts. Bolt that to the engine stand Made the rear one from scrap lying around! Had to return the engine stand so I've since changed the front to one bolted to the bumper, but again made from scrap! If you are going to make one, ensure that the pivots are the same height and you have some adjustability to get a good balance when its turned over. (check the ebay and supplier ads for roughly where the pivot is.) Also,make sure you have enough height to turn the car over to 90deg. In pic 2 mine clears the roof support by 2". SWEEET

Just go gentle when rolling it over (easier said then done!) We have rolled over a couple of novas to remove bits and i was sure it would ruin the doors. Both times not a dent.

Don't roll it all the way over? Roll to 45 degrees or so, that way it'll sit on the sills and they're pretty bombproof: Jack it up onto stands. Two people can then squat-lift up onto a baby workmate. Then shoulder lift onto the stand. Straps stop the bottom of the car sliding away. Better yet also add straps to tie the top down, and a stick to prevent the bottom of the car towards the stand. Flip it the other way to get the bits you can't reach.

I have literally just done this with my Volksrod. We just put the matress down, took off the doors, and lifted it and rolled with a couple of us.

My mate just used a pair of old discs and brake drums And welded up a a brace to them with some curved staff bar attached sticking out so it just rolled over on them
Kind of hard to explain tbh but worked well

Try one of these tilter roller thingies. Probably the safest and cheapest method. They bolt to the wheel hubs.

The Factory Lada rally team used to place a wheel with tyre in the side window then tip the car on its side to do major servicing of the car.

Does anyone else have the same first thought when looking at these of how you'd try to escape as your car starts coming back down? I'm sure they're safe, I just can't not picture me always legging it everytime I think I see movement.
