I'm refurbing some rims I had to stick on my 205 They are 5.5" wide 13". It currently has 135R13 tyres on the standard steels. I want to lower it as well once the wheels are on so what size tyre will look/work right.

I'm a fan of 185/60 13's & run them on 5.5" & 6" rims, but I know a lot of people prefer the lower profile look of 175/50's

If you are looking for a smaller tyre with a lower profile then 165/55 might be worth a try. It will probably need a fair ammount of lowering though, more so with the 175/50s which have a bit less side wall again. The 165/55's are shed loads cheaper. www.willtheyfit.com will give you an idea of how different tyre sizes will compare.

tyrecalc gave these results when working back from the standard 1.6 gti wheel/tyre size (185 60 14) % figures are the speedo discrepancy.
195/60 R13 564 mm 1772 mm -2.32 % 185/65 R13 571 mm 1794 mm -1.19 % 195/65 R13 584 mm 1835 mm 1.06 % 175/70 R13 575 mm 1806 mm -0.42 % 185/70 R13 589 mm 1850 mm 2.01 % 165/75 R13 578 mm 1816 mm 0.02 % 155/80 R13 578 mm 1816 mm 0.1 %

Hi Welshpug,
I believe the % figure may actually refer to the change in total rolling diameter of the tyre. Hence a 185/70 tyre as shown above has a 2.01% larger diameter than the standard GTi setup.

Cheers for the input guys. Anyone know the aspect ratio for the 135r13s that are on it? there is nothing on the side of the tyre and the handbook just states 135 -13. I'm thinking that anything to low profile will look like it is on castors with 13s. I think the xs and uk rallye use 165 70s? Look about right? They are only going to be winter wheels as I don't like them that much, and pretty much any tyre will be an upgrade over the 135 "Road Champs" that are on it at the mo.

I'm surprised at a car like that having skinnny 135s. I'd have thought it'd have 155s as as minimum. Anyhow, tyres with no aspect ratio number are 80 or 82 profile. As markB says, ideally you want a profile that looks right with whatever ride height your running. A really low profile tyre won't have any advantages at stock height and would probably look a bit silly.

tyres with no aspect ratio number are 80 or 82 profile. Thanks that's the info I needed, looks like its either a 165-70 or a 175-65 to keep it asimilar diameter to the original.
