Manual choke? Sounds like the choke is on, probably a bit smelly too if that's the case.

I wonder if it's stuck open? I'm theorising here based on what you described being precisely what happens if I leave my choke out when I'm being a doofus, you'll get a high idle, a rich running smell and often grey-white smoke out the back. Hopefully it'll be an easy fix for you, I can't advise further as I've never fiddled about with auto-chokes.

The auto choke carbs are a known weak point on these so that may be where your problem lies
I can't see any reason why leaving the ignition on while changing the plugs would be either dangerous or cause any thing to happen with the starter motor. Does the starter make a clicking noise when you try and start it? It's may sound a silly question but has your battery gone flat through having the ignition left on?

Looks like it is a problem with the choke guys thanks. although you would have never guessed what it is. the choke flap seems to have been replaced with an old tobaco tin, crudely cut into shape and and help in with some split pins. anyone got a spare choke flap for the pierburg carb?

could you post a picture of the carb bit you need? ive got a couple of mk2 golf 1600/1800 carbs in bits if they're the same?

good idea i think, but poor excecution. Got the car on the road today  found insurance from Peter James Insurance. £1400 fully comp, unlimited mileage, with the mods declared, paid in 4 intallments (this is very very good for a 20 year old with no no claims bonus) Taxed it, brimmed the tank, and set off. Pulled over in NEW college bromsgrove next to a ratty silver 5 door mk1 golf, slammed on blue vauxhall wheels. anyones? then all of a sudden a horrible clonking noise from the front, increasing with road speed. luckily i was right next to an industrial estate so pulled in and sure enough my nearside cv joint had gone  left the damn thing at the garage and got a lift home off mom, as the bloke there cant get the part til tommorow morning booooo! however he is doing it for £80 which ent bad. also learned that he is restoring a mk1 morris mini van, and putting a 48v motor in a sinclair c5! not loving old cars atm |

175/60's are the correct size for 5 1/2" x 13" rims. That is the size fitted to the G40 models.
How is it for clearance on the rear arches?
Really looking nice mate.

Really looking nice mate. ah really? i spent ages looking through a whole host of different sizes with a good width, nice profile, and not cost much. £50 a corner for the Kumhos. Its lowered around 60mm, and when the wheels first went on the rears rubbed like a curse word, so heatgun, hammer, and waxoyl later and theres loads of clearance. |
