Welcome to RR mate. Hey, that's exactly my sort of car! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) The Country was one of the many "special" edition models that VW were so keen on making back in the day - mine is a "Match". The Country were 1043cc hatchback only but with glass sunroof, metallic paint, twin headlamp grille, tinted glass and some stickers! That looks quite a tidy example, just the n/s rear arch needing a bit of work and a respray on the fuel filler to really smarten it up. I think you'll find the "adjustable suspension" is height adjustable at the rear only via a collar on the strut. The front 'll be just shorter coils - I reckon it could do with nipping a turn off them to bring the front down a touch. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) Dunno if you're up to speed with these in general? An important check is the battery tray - take out the battery and look for rust. Good luck with it mate and keep us posted. Cheers, Richard.

Thanks guys! I doubt i will be doing much with the rear arch as it is my daily car and will be using it to lug guitars, amps and possibly other musicians around in, so it ent gonna be perfect.
i was thinking the same about the front coils though! needs a touch of rake, although i have heard about lowering top mounts?

i have loads and loads of engine plans but they will have to wait until I am rich and famous due to being 20, with no NCB living in the rough parts of birmingham no its going to be kept fairly standard just the odd thing done for a bit of style!

Yeah you can get lowering top caps but they are really only about 10mm at best. Not worth the money IMO. Save your dollar and cut the springs.

They just don't like to stop, I think it is due to the servo location more than anything else. My mum bought a polo fox new in 1991 and that's all I really remember about my parents talking about!
Oh yeah failed it's first mot on a rotton battery tray due to too much wax blocking the drainage holes. It got replaced by a 106 after that, my mum always hated it because it was grey!

They just don't like to stop, I think it is due to the servo location more than anything else. ^ the UK mk2s don't have a servo at all! Having said that, the brakes are only scary if you're not used to them. Once your right leg gets used to them you'll be fine. The brakes are actually pretty good for what they are, the car is only 750 kilos so you don't need much! Welcome to the forum btw, nice little bready you got there.

Yeah once you get used to the brakes it's fine. Although my right leg wouldn't look a miss on Arnold Schwarzenegger.

the pick up went great. picked up the wheels, went to nuneaton trailor hire for the trailor, £40 for the trailor all day, so i recommend them. car was as described, with plenty of history and in lovely nick. shame though that when i come home, virgin have dug up our internet cable and broke it, so no pics for a few days ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) however i can tell you that the wheels (13x5.5 mk3 golf steels now fitted with 175 60 13 khumo rubber) look great! only thing about the car. on a very cold start, the engine taps fairly loudly on one of the cylinders. it doesnt increase or decrease in noise with revs, but once warm you can barely hear it. what do you recon? valve clearances? or something more serious like piston rings?

Probably just a sticking Tappet mate being a later mk2 it will have hydraulic tappets.
The brakes ain't all that bad on them if they are in good condition, if they don't feel like they are working effectively then a fluid change and some decent pads won't go amiss. They do naturally feel heavy tho due to the lack of servo as already mentioned

yep hydro tappet. Easy job to do...
I reccomend doing the cambelt and waterpump at the same time as you''ll have to take the cam out to do them anyway..

cheers guys, the noise has disapeared completely now :S
however, today i changed the oil and spark plugs, put it back together and now it wont start. in fact the starter motor isnt turning at all.
i realised after doing the sparks, that i had accidentally left the ignition on (stupid, dangerours and possibly lethal i know) but could this have anything to do with it not starting?
cheers

Hah, I was watching this one and tempted to get it as a spares car (though where the money was coming from to buy it I have no idea) to sort mine out. Glad someone else has picked it up.
If the starter motor isn't turning, might you have cooked it? A replacement won't be much, everything on these is dirt cheap. Retrowagen and Mk2PoloBloke are go-to guys when it comes to Mk2s, they've helped me loads. Club Polo isn't too bad a place all of the time these days either, so probably a good idea to give them a try too, though they'll likely tell you to get rid of the engine for a 6n 16v tdi or something, many of them were taught by Clarksonius I think.
Good luck with it though, they're thoroughly capable cars if looked after and can fit endless amounts of stuff inside.
