Hi guys, I know it's quite obvious, but I had a heart stopping moment earlier that really made me stop and think how bad it could have been. At the minute I'm breaking a Cinquecento. I took most of the interior out the other day to photograph for eBay but have run out of space everywhere, so I had to stick it in the living room for a few days. I've previously mentioned on other threads about how much my little lad loves anything to do with cars, especally when I leave a full interior lying around in the living room. Within minutes he'd put everything where it should be and was pretending to drive. I moved everything into a car/shed/storage thing that's in the garden at the moment last night, but couldn't find the steering wheel. I left the house earlier to take some more bits off the Cinq down at my storage place, on the way I had a call off Mrs MiniDan. My lad had hidden the steering wheel to play at a later date. He got it out and was running round the living room with it pretending to drive. He tripped over, the steering wheel went flying and hit the floor. BANG! The thing went off. Luckly, my little lad, Mrs MiniDan and the dog wern't very close to it but the bang was so big it knocked a glass off the table that was behind them and filled the living room and kitchen with smoke. I was quite close to the storage place when I took the call. When I got there all I could do was sit there for a few minutes as I couldn't get out of my head what could of happened. I didn't realise that it could go off from a jolt like that. I thought they were specifically designed to only detonate with an electrical charge put threw them. In hineside I shouldn't have thought that and took the charge out. I feel like such an idiot with it all ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) Have some cars on bags to make up for the rambling post, I just had to get it off my chest. ![](http://ll.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagames/NFS/speedhunters.com/Images/Raekelboom%20Kevin/DSC03363.jpg) ![](http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/2823/223/32055111048_large.jpg) ![](http://www.auto-tuning24.com/bilder/vw-audi-tuning/vw-caddy-alufelgen-tunning.JPG)

Reminder well considered. I think some airbags are mechanically triggered, where a weight moves to strike a cap and set off the bang. Just looked for some diagram to back me up, but can't find one ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Anyway, glad no one was hurt. I don't think your to blame dude, i really don't think many people would know they go off without a charge.

I think Newton might have something to add here. Consider that all faction has an equal opposite reaction. If it went off then chances are the bag would have only hit with around half the force than if it was attached to the car as the wheel had room to move. Nonetheless, i see your point! Lucky all are ok!

If you open an airbag up and cut off the actual bag material then connect to power to trigger the result is frightening. MASSIVE bang and flames ! I did this with the one off my old Neon and expected the bomb squad to pay me a visit !

Glad no one was hurt. Honest mistake. I too would have thought an electrical signal was required to set it off. Thanks for sharing. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

We once tried for hours to get one from a mk3 astra to go off.We were throwing the steering wheel up and down the industrial estate and not a thing from it. We then put it in a vice and put 240v to it and it went off like a bomb.Ive never being in a car when ones gone off but i wouldent like to either. Just unlucky dude and we all learn from things like this.

It is possible that it was a static charge that set it off - carpets are great for producing static.
Glad no-one was hurt.

Panda, that looks AMAZING to try out!! I've got a pair of seatbelt tensioners that have a similar explosive setup laying around, but in a tube instead. Might try to fire a CV joint ball out of it one of these days ;D
Here's a question, as all airbag systems are only designed to last 10 years, does this mean the explosives could actually degrade over time, and therefore become sensitive to hits/knocks themselves?
Kinda worrying if some do, as the airbag system in mine is coming up to 16 years old.....

Ive seen what can happen when they do go off, amazes me how something that is designed to save your life in an accident is actually so dangerous when you think about it. glad the little one is OK.

I was greeted with the airbags in my mondeo the other week. ![](http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h20/sutty2006/DSCF0739.jpg) Needless to say, they saved my life. I recon they knocked me out, well knocked my glasses clean off my face at least! Glad there were no injurys in your incident. Ive got a few airbags knocking around my workshop which I might just get rid of.

Glad everyone is ok
Work colleague was seriously injured when her airbag went off for no apparent reason as she was driving down the Acle straight between GT Yarmouth and Norwich causing her to crash her Pug.

Cinq wheel with airbag is an unusual one, most airbags have a separate module mounted somewhere in the car that fires the 'bag via an electrical pulse, this type, once disconnected are relatively safe (well as safe as anything containing a chunk of c4 can be) The Cinq system is self contained, from memory it takes charge off the feed to the horn buttons and stores it internally in a capacitor. Any impact hard enough can then set the 'bag off, whether it's in the car or, as you discovered, in the lounge. Glad no one was hurt though.
