I've bought a new motor. Its just recieved its 12 months mot, and its insured, i'm waiting for the insurance documents to come throught, and also the v5 is not in my name yet (i've sent it off , but doubt i'll get it anytime soon)
Now will i be able to tax it at the post office once the insurance cert comes through?
And if i don't want to wait that long, am i allowed to drive it? My mate seems to think i get 14days, but i'm not certain. I only need to drive it to the bodyshop to have work done to it, but its obviously not for mot work or anything like that.
I'd rather just wait if its not kosher

I don't know if there's different rules for brand new cars, but if your car is second hand you should be able to tax it online. I insured an MOT'd but SORN'ed car and half an hour later I was able to tax it online. You may need the V5 number, not sure. Is it printed on your new keeper slip? www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/

Don't tax it online until you've got the new V5 back in your name. The chances are that they'll send it to the previous owner otherwise.
You can tax it at a post office with the 'new keeper' supplement and MOT/insurance certificate. Persoanlly, if you can wait, I'd do it on Thursday so you're not paying a whole months tax for effectively two days of use.

When I got my car a few months ago - I waited for the insurance paperwork to come through, got the MOT, and the V5C, took it all off to the post office - all they wanted was the V5C, they don't need the paper versions of the other stuff, as it's all computerised now And if you don't have tax, unless it's to/from an MOT test, you CANNOT drive it on the road... period.

I did think about the computerised MOT and insurance when I taxed my new car last month (first time I've not taxed a car online in years!) but took my insurance certificate and MOT with me just in case. They did check them, but kinda assumed it would probably be alright without them.

Good point about waiting till the month end MM, I always fall foul on that one. Most insurance company's will be happy to fax your cert to wherever you can find a fax machine if speed is of the essence.
Driving without the relevant docs could induce a dry bumming by the man if the worst comes to the worst!

I went in with my V5 but not MOT & insurance docs and my local PO wouldn't tax it. They are a bit backwards around here though...

Funny that. I taxed a bike a few weeks back and they turned me away because I'd picked up the wrong bit of insurance paper. A big element of pot luck with all of this I guess.

looks like i'll have to hang on then, i don't think i have the new keep slip, long story, as i bought it off a mate whos a trader.
I was under the impression you don't need the V5 to tax it? or is that only if you have the reminder, which i suppose is as good as the v5.
Great looks like i'm at the whim of the DVLA's great document return, just got one back from a bike i bought, that was 10 days, and thought that was quick for them.

I just taxed mine at the PO with the certificate of insurance and the mot. They didn't even ask for the v5.

Our local post offices wont tax cars anymore, has to be done at a main post office round our way if you don't want to do it online.

As stated I would wait for your docs to come through.
It seems Post Offices can be a lottery. I generally tax cars online but the last two times I have taxed cars (106 and Stag) I had to take all 3 docs to the post office.
