As I mentioned in the metro thread, I'm finally pulling my finger out and getting my 5 door metallic beige granny spec metro back on the road for much needed low cost motoring. But I found some rust. Which of course turned into colander effect Just had my local mobile welder round to have a nose. £200 And he's always been roughly 1/4 of the price of anyone else I've had estimates from. So it's time to have a think. If I hadn't already (as in last year) put a lot of money into the car I'd get rid of it, but it has a new rad, new windscreen, a couple of new balljoints, a new wheel bearing etc. etc. So a lot of money already. It doesn't help either that my Nan bought the car new so it's got a little sentimental value, if no actual financial value. Apart from these rust patches (the worst being where a previous repair was bodged mean a large section of floor needs cutting out, the jacking point removed and replaced), the car is pretty sound and only has 78,000 on it. I'd like to get at least a couple of years out of the car before I do replace it. I guess I'm looking for some moral support!

If it lasts a couple of years, then you get a little for it when/if you sell, that's not much per mile - cheap motoring. Some people spend many more times that ordering an optional colour for their brand new blandplebmobile. That's how I look at it

Go on bosh a couple of hundred on it! As much as I hate Metros, sentiment is a hard thing to put a value on!

whatever you spend on it - it will still be a metro
sell it to another old granny and buy a car instead

£200 doesn't sound much to spend to give you a couple of years more life from it. Even if it is a metro.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Heh heh cheers fellas I'll try and dig out some pics of the car, and take some of the damage. The same bloke did the welding on my 99T and condsidering I *still* haven't done the tidying up of it it's solid 3 years later. He only does the welding, no filler etc. His main job is a coded welder for strutural work or something, but he does classic cars as a hobby, and takes on MOT repair/minor restoration as a bit of pocket money. If a MkV Cortina counts as a car, then so does a metro

Don't Cortinas still burn coal or something?! hehe, only kidding, got fond old memories of those old barges, true 70's at it's shameful best! I'd say go for it nutcase, £200 doesn't sound too bad, and the sentimental thing would get me everytime!

Put that £200 notes in your pocket and get down to the shops and buy a Welder, then spend some time learning the artform, Simple.....
If thats not your thing then, well 200 sounds ok to me.

The moggy is my Dad's, the Metro is my one, and the Saab 900 that we were stripping was an ebay win for me. Can anyone tell what the bodyshell is on the top of the rack in the background? Didn;t get time to take pics today, so will try tomorrow. Was too busy stripping the interior out!

Id easily put in £200 to save a car, especially one that carry sentiment. And I'm on a curse word wage so thats a lot of money to me but it would be worth it. Think of the guilt if you let it go to the scrap yard! Do it man!! Besides this welder dude is giving you a good price.

Car on the rack looked kind of Ford pop/prefect like to me. Probably the latter.
