I'm putting a modern German engine into a old British car (ducks the rotten veggies being thrown!), I've got an engine mount mismatch (obviously!) and I'm wondering what others have done?
The original mounting points cross-member are about 6 inches too far forward of the bracket mounting points on the engine, thinking of using a small “subframe” to link the two, bolted onto the original cross-member mounts, running back along the chassis rail to link with engine mounts and then on past the engine mounting points to rest further down the chassis rail with rubber bushes at both ends.
Bearing in mind that these “subframes” will be bolted down to the cross-member and onto the engine, will it be OK to allow them just to rest upon the chassis via a rubber bush?
Trying to keep all the mods easily reversible, just in case that this old British car suddenly shoots up in value!
Thanks Andy

It depends on how they're bolted to the cross-member, but generally I'd have to say I wouldn't be that happy with that set-up. The engine will pull up on the engine mounts as well as pushing down on them. It also sounds like there would be little to stop the engine moving from side to side unless the sub-frames were able to brace against the inside of the chassis legs as well as the top.

I think you're right, I also think that the engine mounts will be too far cantilevered forward by using the original chassis mounts. Guess I'll have to weld new mounts in, just wanted it easy to swap back to original. May still use the idea of a small subframe, I'd also like to use Escort World Cup style mounts? Andy
