On the way out today I came across a broken down car between two blinds bends on a very fast section of the A485. The car had its nose in the hedge so at first I thought he had crashed. I stopped my car a way back and put the hazards on and when over to see if I could help. The reason the nose was in the hedge was the driver had tried to put the car up the bank to get it off the road when it cut out but didn't have enough momentum left to do so which left the car blocking one side of the road. I then pushed the car out with help of the owner and towed it 100yds to a laybye where it and its driver would be far safer. Unfortunatly I didn't have the time to stay and wait with him for the breakdown service or to have a look as to why the car had cut out as I was already running late. The poor driver was astonished that I had stopped and helped him as he had been in that dangourous situation for over 1/2 an hour and every one else had driven on some had even rolled down the windows and laughed. I'm sorry but I thought British people where better than that and did not think anything of stopping to help! Would you have done the same? What has happened to the world where people aren't willing to help a chap out when they obviously need it. Yes I got whinged at for being late but that wouldn't stop me doing the same again. I lost 10minutes of my day and told the boss that he could take it out of my lunch break if he was that bothered. He wasn't. But I know if the shoe was on the other foot I would have been very glad for the help and strongly believe that you reap what you sow.

i would and have. you do have to be a bit carefull though. its not unknown for people to set traps, so they can nick your car. obviously the chances of this happening are slim. I always prefer to drive past slowly, and if i think they could use help i will turn around and go back.

It's out of question to NOT stop.... Seriously! One shouldn't even have to ask that question. That said - when my diff broke; maybe 5% of people stopped or asked if I needed help.

Only a couple of weeks ago i stopped to try and help out a Daf owner, but when i stopped nobody was around (suspect he was in the local McDonalds ;D) Also stopped to help out when i saw a ford escort mk3 had trouble (exhaust fallen off), but there was a reliant rialto and toyota supra helping him already. Apart from that i do try to help as much as i can, especially when its an older car

It doesn't matter to me what the car is I will stop to help but on the other hand if that car is a tasty retro one id certainly want a look around it. The car above was a Rover 416 the old boxy type so at a push could even be described as retro

why didnt you bum in the nearby fields ^ Why make a comment like that? That was insulting! and exactly the attitude I can't understand. Helping someone doesn't make weak weird or anything like that it makes you a decent person who cares not just for themselves! I will continue to help other people whether or not I know them if I can. cus hes a 12 year old using his dads computer, which of course is full of porn "bumming in fields"

I always try to help if I'm not in a hurry, even more so if the car in question is something cool. It helps that I always carry my entire set of tools in my nova's massive boot

As for the original question , Yes I would stop and have done in the past many times. One thing ive found though is some people are very greatfull that you even ask if you can help. Others are frankly damn rude, me- You alright there?, Need any help? them - no I'm fine, rac's on the way. ^that was it... No thanks for asking though... And said in a very arsey way Others have been realy realy greatfull.. Offering to give me money and all sorts... Remember helping out a girl in B-mouth when I was about 17.. turned out the kinglead had popped off on her rover... her thanks was as I was walking away saying no worries, She said oy and flashed me ;D ;D

i stopped to help a young guy in a fiat punto who had been hit by a volvo! wasnt a good sight, the ar was in the middle of the road in bits.
i pulled over asked to help, the punto wouldnt start and neither would it push...
polie and the guys parents were on the way and i resulted to pulling it into the side of the road with my car, untill the police arrived!
i felt proud of myself for giving 45mins to help someone and the parents and him were so thankful indeed!

Last time I stopped to help someone was in Sheffield, she'd broken down on a the very busy University roundabout. It's one of those you can't see across and people whizz round it quite fast, so she wasn't in a great spot. I wasn't in a car, I was walking home at the time.
Like a fool, I ran across the roundabout, knocked on the window to see if she wanted some help and, after a terse comment to her idle passenger, we started pushing the car out of the way. All at once, a transit behind us unloaded the passengers and they too helped, the van blocking the traffic. In that instance, I can understand why nobody stopped to help, in all fairness, but I was surprised that nobody seemed to notice her broken down in a dangerous spot of road.
Fact is, people are too scared to help most of the time, you never know what or who you're going to encounter which is why it's important to keep at least basic tools and a charged mobile phone with a bit of credit on it in the car in case you do come unstuck yourself.

In that situation I think another driver would have been have been in a better position to help as they could have used there vehicle and it lighting as a warning to other drivers. I'm not saying what you did was wrong I would have done the same thing and think it would be the right thing to do. Only a car could have stopped to help and protected you whilst moving the car in one which from what you say is what the van did.

I was following a lovely lancia delta integrale round the lanes near me a few months back whilst out for a drive in the scoob,i noticed that one of his rear wheels was doing odd things so tried to alert but after a sharp right hander he noticed it himself as the damn wheel nearly came right off and the rear of the car just swung into the centre of the road! It was in a dangerous position so i stopped and went over and it was an old chap and his wife, the lancia was LHD and they had just had it fully restored in memory of their son whos car it had been until he lost his life serving in afghanistan. We managed to get it over to the side of the road, the poor old fella was panicking loads so sat him in my car and as they didnt have a phone i let them use mine whilst directing the traffic, then drove out to meet the AA truck and take him back to them as it was a bit difficult to find. Once they were all loaded up they took my number and they did ring to say thanks,i forgot to ask what the problem was with the car tho lol, woulda been interesting to find out ;D
