Firstly I'd like to point out that I've tried the club polo forum for an answer, but to no avail. And since this is a much friendlier place I'm hoping I'll find some decent advice.
My mk2 polo 1.05ltr is playing up rather a lot. When starting it up in the morning it's idle is quite irregular and will backfire (pop and bang) at random intervals. It's impossible to drive off whilst the engine isn't completely warmed up as it'll just jolt and judder no matter what gear or revs are used. It's just like Del Boys reliant Robin!
But now, even when the car has fully warmed up after I've left it idling for 15-20 minutes it will judder when accelerating, I've actually almost ground to a halt trying to get up a slight incline.
I have had some advice, spark plugs might need cleaning and I have read that it could be a carburettor problem. But since I'm not a mechanical minded person whatsoever (but I'm a keen learner) I haven't a clue where to start.
The car is my daily driver and I don't wish it make the problem and worse. If someone could give me some simple step by step advice I'd be extremely appreciative.

I'd go with ignition timing too, or has your cambelt jumped some teeth. does the engine have a manual or automatic choke

It has a manual choke. I have no idea what I'd be looking for if I was to check the ignition timing or cambelt. From reading through other forums it could be a problem with the carb and the cold weather. :/

what carb is it running? my personal experience of mk2 polos and carbs isnt a happy one! had similar issues with my last one. carb icing, rough idle etc. tried alsorts to fix it. new hot air feed, different carb, different dizzy. thankfully a mate bought it off me and I went out and got a polo gt to replace it with which had lovely fuel injection! If i were in your situation I would consider ditching the carb and replace it with the single point injection system fitted to the later mk2f polo. it would be pretty much plug and play. think you would need to swap the fuel tank out and you would obviously need to install a new engine loom (not as hard as it sounds). With a bit of luck you should be able to pick up the stuff to do it for very little money and it will imo improve your mk2 no end.

They do like to be little buggers.
I'd check that your spark plugs are healthy, plug leads and HT lead are healthy too. If that's all good, have a look in the distributor cap and check the rotor arm. These are all going to help eliminate anything minor (as I've been learning this year) and might show up some worn parts that you can clean or replace and help the problem cure a bit.
If you don't know when the cambelt was last replaced, get that done and get the timing set properly, if the timing isn't just so on these engines they run like a bag of spanners.
Get yourself a Haynes manual, the engine on these are nice and basic so self-teaching is a lot easier than with some more complicated things.
The easy route does seem to be to replace the engine with a later model. I'm being stubborn and sticking with the original in part to learn how it all works, but also because there must be a solution to this poor running issue all Mk2s are getting now.
Club Polo's solution is normally (but not always) 'put a bigger engine in it' or 'scrap it and get a newer one'... not exactly helpful.

Thanks for the replies. It's running the original carb I believe and from reading other peoples problems with theirs it seems to be the "icy carb" situation. An engine swap is a very tempting one, I do quite a bit of dual carriageway driving and the puny 1.05 engine isn't a lot of good for me there.
I hope the polo gets through today alright as I'll be buying myself a run about so I can take the polo off the road and try my hand at sorting it out. I've actually been keeping tabs on a Haynes manual on eBay, it'll certainly be a worthy purchase. Thanks guys, I'll let you know how I get on!

Well I spoke that up. Car doesn't run anymore, it'll start up (just) and then die out. Time to get it off the road for winter methinks.

Good news. Just had someone bring round a big box of tools and we had a good look around everything, all the spark plugs got a good clean, they were black so it looks like volksangyl's diagnosys was spot on. Cleaned up the rotary arm which was in a sorry state and ha a good look at the carb. I'll be heading off for some new plugs in a bit. Cheers guys.
