Hi all, recently the Scirocco had started making a dull banging noise getting progressively faster and louder as I drive faster, I haven't dared go above 50, as it gets quite loud. It sounds just like a slightly loose wheel, but it's not. I had a peek and the O/S CV gaiter was split, and all the grease all over the inside of the wheel, so assumed it was a dried out and fubar'd CV joint. Changed the CV this evening, and the problem is still there, although slightly more quiet.
Anyone got any idea what it could be? it sounds like it's coming from the O/S, but I guess it isn't necessarily. Definitely drive train due to progressively worsening as I speed up.

Probably a curse word wheel bearing. turn the wheel by hand, I reckon you'll feel a notch

Both front wheel bearings are almost new and good, checked them first..

them boxes are cheap as chips if you think is fubard then get it pulled out and swap...
or what about the clutch my old mk1 cabrio golf started making bad noises and turned out it was the clutch friction plate the rivots had come apart making some bad noises because of it..even when me mot man said it was the gear box.

Got it on a ramp at lunch, everything seems to be fine, but there is quite a lot of float in the O/S drive shaft, more than there should be, and when you wobble it about, it makes just the noise.. will strip it tomorrow and investigate.

check your brake caliper bolts,.

There was a distance washer missing from the drive shaft end, which explained the play in the shaft, fitted a new one and the noise is still there..

check the bolts that go on the inner cv, mine was making a bad clunk once, turned out 2 of the bolts my mate did up were loose....

Ok, thanks will check that. Tomorrow going to go round and check everything, swap wheels etc. If I still can't find anything it's getting a drive shaft and a wheel bearing.

Pretty sure it's not the box, I've had a few mechanics drive it and they all say it sounds like drive train , after the box that is.

It tends to be the 16v and cable change box's that's diffs give up, as it was only the late ones where they started riveting the diff together rather than bolting them. I'd be going with an inner CV joint my self. Mine killed both inner ones in my ownership and they sounded exactly as you've described.
It'd also be worth checking that the engine's central on the mounts, the end mounts are slotted about 3/4" and if it ends up too far one way it can cause the CV joints to bind as they can't take up enough the slack.

Thanks, I have a whole new drive shaft with both new CV's sitting here, also a bearing. If that doesn't fix it, I'm gonna go radio rental.
