Anyone done this conversion? Either with a rover V8 or a yank lump? Id like to go down the auto route as it should be a bit easier to do.
Bascially ive got a tatty but very sound 1990 2 litre 740 saloon thats just come off the road. Instead of baling it or gutting it for parts for my 940 I think it would be nice to get a V8 in there.
Any ideas?
Am I just being stupid?

Rover V8 for a better power to weight ratio - the Rover engine probably weighs less than the Volvo lump you're taking out.

they do but they cost £££££ to extract lots of horsepower out of.......... if you have the money go for a chevy LS series, that would be ace! and bloody expensive! if not an old cast iron yankee ford / chevy will be peanuts to tune. Sounds like a great idea, go for it! whichever V8 you choose it will sound marvelous!

Can the 4.7 V8 engine from a Jeep Grand Cherokee be used? Anyone know anything about those lumps?

The Ford smallblock goes in well. Go find the V8owners forum, theres a guy on there done the conversion. He's called Volford or something.
I know nothing about a 4.7 Jeep V8 engine. Is that in the new Grand Cherokkee? The regular motor we got in the Jeeps over here since they launched as RHD is the 4.0 straight six. They never offered a V8 here as apparently the RHD column conflicts with the exhausts. The old Cherokee with the larger body had a range of great V8s, from 290 (4.7) up to 401 (6.6) most commonly seen in the 70s with the 360 (5.8 litre)

I must be going soft in my old age. A couple of years ago this would have been straight over the weigh bridge with just a few spares picked off. don't even want or need ANOTHER car, but the idea is just so kick ass in my mind its gotta be explored.
The online conversion kit costs 250 dollars and thats for the engine and gearbox mounts, using the existing volvo mounting bolt holes. Id need either a ford or chevy V8 for that conversion, then id need the exhausts making up and the prop, the prop atleast shouldnt be too expensive. The pics ive seen online use the original volvo rad too. The speedo is driven from the diff so thats not a problem. Its sounds definately do-able.

saw a pic of a 744 with a V8 taken a york raceway bright yellow and a park bench on the tailgate unfortunatly it only pulls 17's or something stupid so a decent 740turbo would kinda kick its but
