So I bought a Kei van, one of the MPV variety, thinking I could have a tiny van, a tiny camper, and a tiny six seater. It came with no seats, so clearly a bit of love was required. I picked up a set of rear seats and belts today, but in attempting to install, I discovered a problem. The middle row of seats uses inertia reels like on a proper grownups car, but neither of mine will release any belt past about half an inch, no matter how gently you pull. Anyone know much about this sort of issue, because I've no idea!

Could the reels have been switched between left and right side maybe? IIRC the reels for the middle row are mounted at an angle on a Hijet, so the deceleration sensing clutch (is that the right term) might be just permanently locking them on.

Ah! Is it a pendulum clutch then, rather than a centrifugal one? It could totally be that, I'll check; it never even occured to me! Thanks for the idea.

Definitely worth a check. I've only installed one, so I can offer up the other at the same angle, and see if that frees it.

A bit more fiddling about reveals that they will work, but are extremely sensitive to angle, and it appears I have fitted the first one on the wrong side. Fortunately, it's a single bolt.
