I'm a bit of a Womble, there seems to be a few Wombles in this section of RR in fact. I'm regularly picking stuff up for cheap or even free, giving them a bit of TLC and pressing them into service. Some of this stuff is only a couple of years old, others a few decades and at least one item is a century old now. I'm not going to go mad and post everything all at once, I'd run out of stuff to post about if I did that, so we'll start off with what I grabbed today and some bits related to it. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/table1.jpg) ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/table2.jpg) About the above: It's mostly 1960s. This isn't on purpose but it does seem that now I've moved into a 1960s house, I'm getting a lot of stuff together from the same era. Not a bad thing either really. Coffee TableGrabbed this today from the local antique centre. We were actually looking for a bed frame for my housemate, he moves in on the 4th of December and as yet, doesn't have a bed to sleep in. At this rate he'll end up on the sofa in the living room with the clock that goes BONG every half hour, much to my amusement. The table is full of fake, and we love it for that. The top is a resin/plastic that imitates the popular green onyx with a big red splash through the middle. The legs are a sort of roccoco affair and made to look bronze or gilded but are in fact die cast, painted dark gold and attached to the top with wing nuts. I love this table, we've dubbed it to be in the awesome-hideous style. AshtraysThe big round ashtray was found in a box in the shed. The previous tenant left loads of random stuff, I was told to keep what I want and bin the rest. Fair enough, one arts & crafts style probably aluminium cast ashtray. The smaller ashtray is a chromed thing and I have a matching cigarette box for it, I got these from a charity shop for a tiny sum. the cigarette box is handy for business cards since I don't smoke cigarettes. Pill BoxesThere was a Help for Heroes charity stall at Norton Show earlier this year, the first show I took the Polo to. I grabbed these for something like 25p each I think. Proper onyx tops and goldtone cases with plastic linings. Handy for random screws and nuts and things that usually end up in the bottom of a drawer. Letter OpenerBelonged to my late grandfather, it's jolly useful too. ___ There's lots of stuff going on in the background, partly because we're still moving stuff about. The doors are all going a nice dark brown with cream beading rather than the frankly grim yellowy-white semi-gloss that they seem to be at the moment. Got loads of things I want to share, but I'll wait and see what people think first, if there's enough interest I'll post about more of my random finds.

A bit more wombling, sooner than anticipated. The same day I collected the table above, I found a fake silk lampshade dumped in the lane behind the house. I quickly yoinked it and after a bit of a clean I put it on my freebie standard lamp. I've had the standard lamp for a number of years, it came from Freecycle originally and had no shade or plug. The standard lamp is likely 1960s, gold painted metal with real onyx bits on it. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/standardlamp1.jpg) Today's womble is a big one. After a tip off from my bro, we visited the field by the house and found this massive solid wood coffee table measuring 36" across. Obviously, it's missing what I guess was a glass top, the wicker base has been stomped and a couple of the joints in the top are split a bit. It's also missing one of the legs. However, the table is repairable and worth salvaging so it's sat in my kitchen drying out. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/octotable1.jpg) I'll get the table dismantled as much as possible, fix the top and make a new set of inserts for top and bottom. The wood will get sanded and varnished or maybe painted, depending how good or bad it looks. I'm considering panelling in the the sides with some curtaining, leaving the missing leg side as access to put stuff inside it. If it were 6" smaller across I could've used it in a corner of the lounge for putting the games consoles in, so I might fix this one to sell it on.

I haven't had time/been arsed to get out into the field to look for that missing leg, but I noticed something the house does need and the table could give: kitchen table.
Going to explore the local DIY shop at some point since I've got a chest of drawers (another freebie) that needs some runners. See if I can find some finished pine to the right size to use as longer legs to turn this massive coffee table into a modest kitchen table/breakfast bar.

Table is taking forever to dry, but it was dry enough to dismantle a couple of days ago, which should help it to dry out a bit faster now it's in smaller pieces. Went for a womble to see if I could find that missing leg and it's nowhere to be seen, which is a shame but not the end of the world.
The one thing I did find was a handbag that had been dumped. It was a bit soggy and looked like someone had taken the purse unsurprisingly, but there was an NHS work pass, medicine and an address book in there amongst other things so I handed it in to the police station in the hopes that the bag and contents can be reunited with the owner. I doubt I'll hear anything more on the matter, though it would be nice to know if the police did find the owner of the bag and return her stuff to her.

I am a Womble, guilty as charged. Ive been known to go to my local refuse tip to get rid of a car load of stuff, only to return home with a car load of stuff! Ive been aproched by a jobsworth once saying ''what do you thing you are doing, you cant just go grabbing stuff out of the bin!'' ''Recycling mate, you're all for it, arnt you?'' Do you actualy smoke a pipe, pipe, pipe, pipe......... I like what you're doing there, ive done much the same myself ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

I do indeed smoke a pipe on rare occasions... Got the coffee table top split on another joint and now it's much drier it looks like it'll slot together evenly with a bit of persuasion from my favourite tool.
Photobucket is playing up, I suspect my wonky internet is to blame, so I can't show off the funky 60s white glass lampshades I got for cheap recently. Local charity shop which is always super-cheap is having a 50% sale off to clear stock before moving into bigger premises next year so I expect it'll be difficult for me to resist spending pocket money there instead of putting it in my piggy bank.

Time for a proper womble update now my internet and Photobucket are behaving. Then I'll go to bed, what with it being past 2am ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) Given these by my brother who was a hacking womble before me on these. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-01.jpg) Inside there's a full compliment of car speakers that he got from a scrapyard to replace the original cones. These will be finding their way into my boot with a bit more modifying. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-02.jpg) What do you do when you have an old 1930s China Cabinet that is too broken to restore? Simple, you keep all the useful things (I still have the Smith's clock, the legs and the top somewhere) and repurpose them. Some brand new black wrought iron brackets hold up the old half-moon glass shelves to keep my glassware safe. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-05.jpg) The glassware itself is another bit of a Womble, having found the entire set (though I've lost a few wine glasses over the years and not found replacements yet) in charity shops, jumble sales and swap meets. The main set was available with Tiger Tokens, back in the day, and used to be very easy to get hold of but not so much now. I'll get better pics of them one day, I think it's called 'Starburst' and is by Arcoroc. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-06.jpg) Spotted these for £2 each recently. Stacked one on the other at the back of a floor-height shelf in a charity shop I thought it was an excellent vase at first. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-04.jpg) Turns out they're 1960s glass lampshades that fit the house perfectly and may, in fact, have come from one of the houses since they're contemporary. Tricky to photograph. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-03.jpg) Last for this post is my bigger achievement. I've been restoring the doors to something better than white-ish satinwood. First thing was to do the door knobs which are Bakelite. Soak them in hot water and carefully peel off the paint with a razor blade. Sometimes you get lucky and the paint peels off in one big chunk, but not always. Afterwards, use a tiny bit of beeswax to replenish the handles. Feels much nicer than the blobby old paint that was on them and at £10 a pair for reclaimed ones it's well worth it. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-07.jpg) The doors themselves are being done in dark brown gloss with ivory satinwood beading (I hate satinwood, but the tin was free and it works okay for this application). I've only finished one door, with another 2 waiting for a final coat of brown... then another 6 to do after that. ![](http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab16/volksangyl/Bachelor%20Pad/20111202-08.jpg) So there you go.

Radio wombles... not sure if want. I might accidentally listen to it later.
step 1: think your wrist injury isn't too bad and, after discussing options with housemate womble, go to step 2. step 2: remove stairs carpet to investigate condition of staircase. step 3: staircase good! Figure out what you're doing with it. step 4: realise your wrist injury isn't as well healed as you thought, end up with staircase covered in spikes you can only remove at a rate of one tread per day.
Oops. Ah well. Pictures later, when I can hold the camera. Staircase is getting the treads stripped to bare wood and given some beeswax or Danish oil (not too slippy, nice finish). The risers will be papered with some excellent purple and gold paper that was had for a bargain and the bit of beading and skirting will be painted in cream, mostly likely.
It is at least nice not to have a pink staircase, even if it is straveller.
