Whilst crawling through London yesterday, the car randomly decided it doesn't like to idle, erratic at best. Most of the time it would just cut out.
Pulled over and had a look at things, disconnected the ISCV and the engine wouldn't tick over at all, reconnect and then it was back to dogdy idling. If you held it with a touch of throttle it was fine. Check a few connections etc, but no joy.
That was last night. Parked up all night and just forgot about it and it then drove all the way home to Bristol the next morning without a hitch I took off the control valve and cleaned it up and refitted it, still idling fine. I cleaned it up a few months back already, as the car had/has a tendancy to kangaroo occasionally.
Any suggestions? My finger is pointing towards the ISCV, but any tips will be helpful.
Car is a 2.9 V6 btw.

It sounds more like a vacuum leak. How is the hose between the MAF and the throttle body?

This one's a non MAF. It uses a MAP.

If it's a late cat engine there's only really the ISCV or the head loom plugs at the back of the engine ?

Where abouts are these loom plugs? At the back easy to spot or hidden? ;D

Ok well I fitted a new ISCV and did some more head scratching - I managed to corectly set the base idle. Things were looking promising for an hour or two, apart from a bit kangarooing at times, until the car decided it wants to idle at 2500RPM If I disconnected control valve the revs dropped to it's base idle. Plug it back in and it shot back up. Basically it has a mind of its own. At the moment it's idling fine, which is making this problem all the more annoying. I've checked the hoses, tried spraying WD40 around areas etc but it didn't throw anything up. I've cleaned the loom plugs with contact cleaner also. I've now thrown the towel in on this bloody car.

sounds to me like the idle valve has given up have you taken the idle valve off and cleaned it out? they usually have a bit more life in them from a clean unless completely fubared ;D

You say you've cleaned the contacts, but have you had a look at the wires going into the connector? I've had a few occasions where the connector looks good but the wires were all green and corroded. I don't know how this car sets it's idle, but also check the coolant temp sensor for corrosion. And also, does it have a dedicated "high idle" plunger or is it all 1 piece with the idle control? Of not, worth checking if the high idle solinoid (often for AC or automatics) is not stuck.

Of not, worth checking if the high idle solinoid (often for AC or automatics) is not stuck. Idle is set by the ecu altering the ICSV ECU also ups the idle for AC, there's i sence wire for ewhen it's turned on. For the plugs the only way to test is really to put a mter either side of the joined plugs and check for contimuaty at the injectors ect and the main loom side of the plug or better at the ECU and test each wire individualy but there are easyer checks to do first like the TPS, the coolnt temp sensor would make it run rich as it defaults to cold so the ecu will see a constantly cold engine and run accordingly rich it rarely affects the idle (you watch now i've said that it will be the ecu temp sender ) Have you checked the fault codes? the EECIV doesn't store many but it does store them, the code reader plug is the spare 3 pin one near the battery ?
