Right, just a quick one (hopefully). I have a 306 d'turbo with a XUD and a weedy, pathetic Lucas pump. I Know it's not to good to start banging SVO in it, but what about 'bio diesel' sold (cheaper than dino-juice) at some filling stations? My google-foo is weak, and all I can figure is it should be thinner than veg oil (ethanol content?), I may need to put a shot of 2 stroke oil in it, but it may well rot all my fuel pipes and seals, before causing nuns to have kittens etc.. Anyone tried it? Or know the answer? I have trawled through pages and pages of biodiesel forums, but am none the wiser. Thanks in advance- have some revolting, stinking, lovely diesel stench.

Honestly I cannot say.
I think a few guys have on the 106 forum with TUDs using the Lucas pump who ended up replacing the pump seals/aquiring another pump. The Lucas pumps are not that hardy TBH!
My old 306 ran on Bio before I bought it shortly under my friend's ownership. He soon stopped when his pump became a little damp from some orifices, MPG went up (When I bought it, the MPG was near enough on par with my 106 GTI!), and it became very awkward to start (probably the reason why he sold it to a mug like me LOL).
One thing to bear in mind is most fuels these days have 5% Bio.

Proper commercially produced bio diesel shouldn't be a problem. It's the viscosity of SVO that kills Lucas pumps and possible reminants of methanol in DIY bio diesel that eat rubber components.

Lucas pumps do not have SVO safe seals (they shrink) if the pump does't die from the viscosity it will leak from the seals BUT i've found that if you swap back to dino straight away the seals reswell and stop leaking and they only seem to leak with over 25% SVO to dino mix. SVO safe seals are available for the lucas pomps but no one seems to supply them only supply and fit ? If you sort the seals and heat the SVO you'll be ok as heating lowers the vis of SVO but you will still need to start and end the running cycle on dino so the pump doesn't get any straight SVO in it when cold. All in you can use lucas with SVO/WVO/BIO but it's more complicated that a bosch pump Bio is ok vis wise but the seal problem still remains.

Als not a "pathetic" pump, just not as crude as the bosch[/quote] You are right, it serves it's purpose just fine. I just wish I could run on SVO Thanks for your input chaps- if I try it (and I think I will), I will mix it with derv, see what happens and start increasing the mix. I will report back here slightly less poor, or with a "how easy is it to change an injector pump" question.

I heard this from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Bio diesel can be ok but if the fuel tanker that delivers it hasn't been washed out in a while then all the sediment/crud can get into the petrol station's tank and cause a bit of bother. Bio fuel seems quite 'hit and miss' it would appear (from talking to people who have bought it) and I have to be honest and say I wouldn't bother in a car with a Lucas pump. Small amounts won't see much cost saving and if you knacker your pump up the long term cost is going to shaft you.
