I'm going to look at a camper this weekend, yeah this one... question is it's a 2.4 petrol, which is apparently gutless, and I don't imagine it's great on fuel either, i'd quite like a swap to a TD unit or a more modern efficient and more importantly pokey 16/24v petrol... I don't really want a full on conversion adaptor plates ect, so I would liek to know what in the merc family bolts up, i'd also quite like an auto though only if it's an overdrive unit or 4 speeder...... Not over fussed on mpg, would rather have a decent motorway cruising speed, but '10mpg' wouldn't be acceptable so no 'stuff a s500 engine it'..... what are your thoughts..

probably need to look at the OM6** series engines, likely to have been what they used anyway.

That's an option but old vans are dear and usually worked hard, spares or repair vans aren't usually worth having in my experience... and if i go derv it needs to be pokey and economical to justify the racket, i wouldn’t have a cdi if you paid me, the amount of hours I’ve lost chiselling injectors out of them...
I was wondering if a 260/280/300 I6 lump would bolt up...?

should do. The older 2.9tds are pretty good, even when high miles, and i wish i'd never sold mine 400k and still going great. you can use musso mechanical pumps too or just a musso lump on a sprinter box i think you want the older I6 lumps not m103s sure there is a reason

not seen one of those in a while only ever seen one petrol one too (was a really tired horsebox) the diesels never set the world on fire (unbreakable tho) so id be looking at a sprinter engine too if there is enough room, all the t1's were all 4 cylinders iirc guess you could set the engine back a bit and alter the engine cover/fit? any idea if the big old 4 cylinder from the t2 vans would fit? the minibus they had in my last work had one and it was pretty fast and torquey, its huge and heavy though, being all cast iron and alloy EDIT apparently the T1 409's had the engine out of a 300d so that should fit, can prob use the cars auto box as well?

Find an old Ssangyong Musso and rob the engine and box out of that. It's basically a 2.9 OM602.

if he does go down musso route i'll have the remains! think would be a lot easier with a sprinter box. that and musso boxes seem to be made of toffee

They made the t1 in 310 flavour using the five pot sprinter engine without a Turbo.

the td, could be interested in all that remains not turbo though so doubt be much good for you. Mussos do come in turbo. but ssangyong versions for 2 years 97/98 i mistakenly bought mine as a turbo. turned out wasnt but not been a problem. that said, just need to tap out an oilway and all sprinter stuff will fit, and it seems there is enough adjustment on pump to compensate

Om606 from an e300...
Failing that. Landrover 200 tdi with a boost tweak would push it along nicely, and they're cheap as chips.

Well i bought it...
drove home fine, bar the appalling headlamps in heavy fog, after a half hour of crwaling alongat 20mph i made my Mrs drive the golf (wich was supposed to be following in case of breakdown) in front just so i could see where i was going..
The engines a little peach, starts instantly, seems to have enough power and is surprisingly good on fuel... no desire to change it just yet...
HOWEVER..
it runs out of revs pretty quick, it either needs a 5 speed box, overdrive or much taller back axle, it has enough poke low down so could pull a taller diff, at the moment it's out of revs at 70mph and sounds very strained..
any ideas?
