Hi Everyone! As some of you know I’m selling the Cortina If you do then you'll also know it has an electrical fault. I'm still struggling to find the issue. I've been so busy I’ve just had no time to look over the weekend and its pitch black when I get home during the week. Therefore I’m going to cover everything I can possibly think of and hoping that should sort it (fingers crossed). Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can bathe the fuse box in to remove the build up of gunk on the copper? I'm thinking a mild acid but am worried that if its too strong it may eat through the already thin copper and the other worry is that the plastic housing could be damaged. Basically is there something I can soak it in to alleviate the grime without being to acidic for it?? Or any household cleaning equipment that might suffice Thanks

I bathed a rusted Lucas rear numberplate light in white wine vinegar. Removed the rust, didn't melt the brass (I assume, could be copper) contact strip in the middle, or anything other than the rust. Works a charm now. This did only cost me about £3 though, so I wasn't that worried... Not sure what it'd do to copper though.

Vinegar works fine. Do that then rinse, dry it and put something on to protect it from oxidising again, which it will do very quickly once it's out of the vinegar. WD40 will do. Silicon spray might also do the trick.

Dunno about the vineger but I use vaseline on all the connections, it's a bit more persistent than sprays on stuff.

sand blast them. this works brilliantly as it'll make the contacts springy as it stretches the surface of the metal tags.
even ones that have overheated the contacts which have annealed them soft will become springy again.
obviously be fairly gentle and just clean them off after blasing to get rid of the dust.
done loads of them.

I was going to grit blast the one off my polol, but ended up leaving it to soak in white vinegar. I'm also using contralube 770 on the contacts to try and improve reliability. www.contralube.com/

Cheers for the advice people I'll give the vinegar a go as I we have a large jug of it. Think I’ll then use either Vaseline or Contralube to keep the moisture out. Its a pretty silly design of ford to put the fuse box so near the outside weather. If I was keeping the car I think I’d probably move it to the space above the peddles. Anyhow, I’ll have a look at it this weekend and keep you posted with results.

Just to let those of you who helped, that after setting the fuse box in some vinegar for a couple of days, then putting come carb cleaner on it, WD-40 and load of other spray cleaners and then some sealant, that ........... IT WORKS!!!!! She lives again!!!! All the lights are working, dash gauges, fans, etc!! Thanks for the help and advice people. This will hopefully now make the car easier to sell. Once again thanks for the advice.
