I was talking with a mate of mine the other day and both of us noticed how by the late '70s all the Mark Four Zephyrs and Zodiacs had gone - as had all the PC Crestas and Viscounts: yet their predecessors still could be quite easily seen.
When did anyone here last see a PC or Mk 4 that wasn't at, or on its way to, a show?

Aw, it's a shame to see them like that. Although I suppose they were probably beyond saving. Part of the reason old Fords and Crestas are disappearing is because both tended to wear badly around the suspension, meaning in the case of most Fords, the area around the strut tops ceased to exist and so did the chance of passing an MOT, and in the case of a Cresta, especially the PA models, the stress caused cracking and bending around the rear wheel arches. I've been told of a few where the boot visibly started bending and drooping, to the point where they fell off the rest of the car! No kidding! (although these ones were particularly far gone and about to be crushed most likely)

That's always gonna be the deal for big cars that aren't posh (ie. not jags or mercs) The majority don't want the hassle of something so big: Notice how the only Granadas and Carltons you see these days are caned-to-death dodgy mini-cabs, or untaxed biffabouts for terminally impoverished curse word-heads.

To certain degree its still happens with todays big 'unbranded' cars - the Pug 605 and Renault savranne are incredible value for money.
My personal favourite is the Mitsubishi Galant, a future sleeper retro car if I ever saw one....

Or, even bigger: Mitsubishi Signum, Nissan QX, Honda Legend etc. etc.

then again when some of them were used for banger racing no one knew they would be retro one day. My dad once got a little austin a35 and smashed it up when he was in his youth i still have not forgiven him

Last time I saw a PC Cresta was when I was 16, that's 9 years ago. I wanted to buy it because I thought it looked cool, then I found out the engine size

I wanted to buy it because I thought it looked cool, then I found out the engine size I think it was about that long since I saw one too! 8 or 9 years ago, a small garage near my folks place actually had 2 for sale: A really nice gleaming black 3.3 auto (Hydraglide? ) for about £2k, which I really wanted (so I could pretend to be a gangster!) and a Silver / Blue lower spec manual, that I could have afforded, but it was really tarted up and in reality probably only 2 MOT's away from a dirt oval demise.

I haven't seen many around in years either, other than restored ones. As I said, the rust probably claimed most of them a long time ago, but the tonnes of salt they dump on the roads around here claims most motors young, the scrappies around here have more eight year old Fiestas with no floors and the like than retro machinery

Sad ain't it? It's true that Mk 4s and PCs weren't posh enough to keep, even though they weren't bad cars really.
I wonder if it's the same in Germany woth Opel Admirals and Diplomats? I hope not...

I think it happens more in richer, more snobbish capitalist countries more than anywhere else. I mean, over here everyone aspires to the bigger fancier motors and a lot of people (Joe public, not a real car enthusiast) would be ashamed to admit that they have an old hatchback or regular saloon that is old but not a classic yet, but an oldish executive car still has a bit of an image about it, so there are still plenty of people who would buy one when it is old and cheap but not a classic yet, so they stay on the road and the cars one rung down on the ladder get ignored. It's true in most richer countries where a lot of people are locked into the kind of 'rat race' and 'keeping up with the neighbours' mentality, but in less rich countries, like Russia, any roadworthy and dependable car is a valuable posession, so whether you have a Lada or a Volga you're not ashamed of it, so aren't going to toss it in a scrappie in a hurry.
Bloody hell! I don't half talk wibblepoo, do I? ;D ;D

I saw that Merc lowrider at Run To The Sun - I really can't see what he was thinking with the blue and white paintjob though . Big old saloons are my absolute favourite cars - it's a shame that they are disappearing. But then, I guess, they weren't built in as big numbers as the smaller cars so less survive (that and the economy reasons mentioned before).
