I got a 1998 BMW 328i , parked it up the other day and car was running fine , now it just spins over really quick as if the timing chain has snapped but it has'nt , both chains and tensioners are all good , there was no noises or rattles and its still quiet now when it spins over . Anyone got any ideas please . Thanks in advance .

Camshaft snapped so leaving valves open, hence lack of compression and easy to spin over perhaps?

Why not take the cam cover off first and have a look?

Try looking down the filler neck when a mate spins it over - you might be able to see cams/valves moving and check oil is circulating. Or take a sparkplug out and check for compression & spark when it's out? Just checking the obvious here - make sure the motor is turning over when you use the starter (just to rule out a sticky starter that's not engaging properly) These do sound odd compared to most cars I've had as the 6 cylinder setup is normally a lot quieter than 4-pots. Hope you get sorted

before you rip the engine out,
you didnt by chance start it to move it ten yards then switch it off did you?
this is pretty common with injected motors, if the answer to the above is yes its flooded!! believe it or not!! full throttle and turn engine til it fires, or remove plugs and dry them

sounds like low compression. spin it over does any part of manifold get warm. my 520 with blown head gasket only has compresion on 2 cylinders. spins over fast!

I give up , got it in workshop and tried it again , still spinning over really fast and not trying to fire , Removed coil pack , covers etc and check chains again , everything looks good so try spinning it over with covers off and coil pack out , It spins over properly , Put everything back as it was and it starts first time and runs sweet as a nut , WTF, Only thing i can think of is a intermittent fault with the vanos unit but i don't know much about thenm so not sure if thats a option . Thanks for everyones help , gonna run it for a few days and see what happens .
