Hi, Ive got the rear axle and tank out of my MG at the moment to get some welding done, once its finished off Id like to paint the underside as various new panels have been added and I want to make sure they're properly protected, questions is what would people recommend I use, primer, stone chip etc, never done any painting before so not sure where to start?? Also intend to paint the axle, suggestions?? Thanks!

I don't like stone chip or any of those similar products. Maybe I suck but I've found any car with underseal products on it has rotten worse than one without.
I would use zinc primer, maybe an epoxy primer or Bondaprimer or a red oxide or something like that and then Chassis Black on top of that. Yes, it may chip. But you touch up the chips when you are under the car doing your pre-mot checks each year. Simples.
Use the same stuff to paint floors, chassis, axles, suspensions, etc.
Some people like POR15 for underside work but I never got on with it. I find stuff like their prep spray for bare metal to be dreadful.

As above all the way for me. Only difference is I've been using Jotun Jotamastic 2k marine epoxy, but non-isocyanate. Then chassis black ontop, the epoxy degrades in UV light.
Can brush, roller or spray it, though being very gloopy it leaves brush marks. It's really tough, and rated for 'below waterline' use. About £44 for nearly 5 litres delivered.

as above, after the black use a underseal version of waxoyl and it never fully dries, and is very good

Bob - got a link for that stuff you use?
will - the problem with those underseals is that moisture gets behind them and rots the metal where you can't see it happening, then two years down the line half your sill falls away as its just the tarry gunge holding it together.
IME anyway.

We use a product called Upol Raptor
Its a tintable, spray on, 2 part Polyurethane pickup truck liner..
It is INCREDIBLY tough, and can be tinted with the same tinters as your body paintwork ( in fact it uses the same hardener as the 2k paint as well)
Without doubt this is the best product we have ever come across for this job.
It is isocyanate though so wear an airfed!

bedliner is FTW. Looking at doing my boot out in that to prevent it chipping when hauling my tat.

It's Jotun Jotamastic 87, there's a few on the bay of flea, which was the cheapest I saw at £44 posted. I got mine somewhere else earlier, paid a bit more. it's normally grey, I got mine in black.
There's a winter and summer grade, but far as I can see it's just a different amount of hardener...
I sprayed my boot with it, low pressure so it had a bit of texture. It survived my size 11's clambering in there and dropping spanners and whatnot while modding stuff in there, pretty darn tough.
2.0 tip in cheapchit conventional gun, thinned it with 2k thinner though they flog their own one, but I'm far too tight for that...
