I'm after some recommendations for a tow vehicle that meets the following criteria:
Must be cheap to buy and reasonably cheap to run.
Can tow a trailer carrying a car without attracting attention from the Boys in Blue or VOSA.
Must meet the new London LEZ rules that come into force in January.
OK guys, your ideas please....

GMC Safari/Chevy Astro - Like mine? Actually, not like mine - Burgundy/Gold is not good, and the 90's front end is much cooler. Will pull 2600kgs, and parts are surprisingly cheap. LPG only, obviously. Mine was £940 effectively

One of these: Cheap to buy, and if you get a 2.8 diesel you can run it on straight veg oil apparently with no modifications. My dad's old one was a 2.5 SWB manual, that used to get about 26mpg, which was a combination of hard driving on B-roads (on the way to work, and we always ended up setting off late so he didn't hang about) and towing the Mini on mostly B-roads. would probably be better on a long trip at constant speed, the 2.8 is supposed to be a bit less economical but the veg oil helps. I know someone who tows a huge plant trailer, usually with another Pajero on, using a 2.5 manual that's done over 200k and it's still going strong.... Ours towed like a train, could hardly notice the trailer at all and that was just a 90bhp 2.5, the 2.8 is 120ish. Loads of kit as standard, aircon, electric windows, some had heated seats, twin batteries, leather, etc. They can look cool too: If the MK2 isn't retro enough, the MK1 is rather cool too, although the only diesel available is the 2.5 (same as MK2) Pajeros are the ones to go for - they're Japanese imports and usually have a better spec than the UK Shogun, and usually a lot less rust! Loads of info on the internet - try POCUK if you want to know everything there is to know about them.

+1 on the discovery rust. ive told our lass not too brake hard or the body will come straight off the chassis and carry on down the road!!!! do you want to buy it by the way? the engine and mechanical bits will uproot a tree...... its got 2 inch lift kit, snorkel, kangaroo lights, roof bars, genarally looks bad ass, knobbly curse word tyres, cannot be stopped by any amounts of snow....... new rear axle oil seals and rear discs and pads new clutch last year changed by me (what an that was)...... check all the body mountings, rear/front inner wings, rear seatbelt mounts, boot floor, battery tray, sills, lower front panel......

Despite owning 8 Land Rovers my all time favorite tow vehicle was a 240 Volvo converted to LPG.

scooby pete i agree troopers are good must be a 2.8 or 3.1. the 3 ltr troopers should be avoided like the plauge just look on the i t o c shoguns rust and are prone to cracked heads also on 2.8s the front fuel pump seals can leak and put derv into the oil.plus there very very thirsty lucky to get 20mpg from a 2.8 towing somthing

Would a diesel 4x4 like a Disco be effected by the LEZ? I've only seen the likes of vans and minibuses being discussed....
I used a Volvo 850 T5 all last year for towing my V6 Sierra around. It hates pulling away, but sits happily at 70-80 if you want. Really good when out of first gear, especially as its chipped. Does 22MPG towing. I've also recently used a diesel Disco, a lot more happy pulling away at low speeds, and a bit more stable at higher speeds, but runs out of puff easily on the motorway when faced with any hills. The T5 on the other and will go as fast as you dare!

SSangyong Musso, will continue to praise them. mine is a na 2.9d so not fastest in world, but for towing 70-80 is little excessive though it will do it. If your worried about fuel consumption go for the na, can struggle on hills, but slight tweek on pump will solve that. gets miles better mpg than any 4x4 i've owned. I'd avoid discos as the are permenant 4. LWB makes for very stable towing. lots of forum type support available. and price! probably the cheapest 4x4 to buy. and worst case if it ever does break the engines alone sell well. in 2 years i've never dropped below 25mpg towing. normally around 30.
Negatives. Bloody ugly, Parts pretty much only available online, interior finish poor. not to J standard more like a disco!

Does 22MPG towing. My suggestion was gonna be a Volvo, depending on the trailer he's planning to use. A P2 V70 or S80 will do 1800kg's legally, which is *some* smaller trailers. However not many trailers that light, what ever trailer had a Sierra on top especially on the back of a 850 was way over weight.
