Hi, I need to change the timebelt on my Passat and I wonder if I also need to change the waterpump as well? Thanks for all the answers!

if its run from the timing belt then yes. if its not, id say no don't bother as you don't need to disturb the timing belt to change it.
what year passat and an engine code would help?

If the engine uses the waterpump as a belt tensioner (by rotating it in its housing) then yes, it's a good idea to change it (or at least know you can get one quickly in the middle of the job) because they are often stuck fast and get damaged on the way out. It's also a total pita to do a whole belt job again because it drips from the waterpump once you finished (even though it didn't before)

abs engine? no its an old school one, the cambelt doesnt drive the water pump. apart from removing the water pump pulley (3 6mm allen keys) to get access to the cambelt cover. the job of changing the cambelt and the job of changing the water pump don't over lap. water pump is driven off the ribbed aux belt along with the alternator. power steer is from the small v belt. to change the water pump youd need to drop the power steering pump and its bracket. remove the alternator. you would also need a new thermostat housing as being plastic they deform over time never seal right when you swap them to a new waterpump. by all means its a good opertunity to have a feel for play in the bearings, but I wouldnt go changing it "just because your there" like I would if the cambelt drove it. if you need any guidence doing it then ask us lot!

Thank yoy guys, yes its an old school engine used in plenty of VAG cars! The waterpump is doing fine, no leaks and its pulling the coolant fine around in the engine. Then I will only do the belt and tensioner(s)
Because the engine is an old design I think it will be an easy job and the belt its self is 7 GBP so its not expencive for sure. Glad I don't have a fancy modern 16 valve engine for sure right now!

when you loosen off the powersteering belt pump to drop the belt tension off theres 2 bolts around the back of the pump you need to loosen off to get the pump to move, ones a little well hidden. if your using hand tools it might be an idea to undo the power steering belt pulley bolts while the belt is still tensioned it'll be easier. also the 4 6mm allen keys holding the crank pulley on these will be tight. put a 19mm double hex spanner (swan neck?) on the center bolt on the crank pulley while you undo the allen keys. but you don't remove/loosen the 19mm headed bolt off the pulley. the pulley that drives the aux belts meerly bolts to it. if you know what i mean? all will become obvious!
