	I have two very small compressors that I use for the usual blowing up tyres etc nothing too strenuous however the irritating thing is that both refuse to fire up. I've dipped the oil levels, checked the re-set button on the larger one. They both hum and threaten to burn out something or other. I've even stuck a screwdriver on the fan and given it a nudge (don't tell HSE they'll be round to cart me away ) So does anyone know what I need to do? Council tip the lot or a trip to Machine Mart?

	i wouldnt mind betting the con rod. i pressume they are both direct drive? my compressor ran low on oil, and the con rod siezed. motor would hum, but wouldnt drive. took the head off and removed the cylinder liner. got the piston and con rod out, took the con rod apart and took a tiny amount off the siezed part (the pin which joins the con-rod to the cam) using a lathe and re-assembled. all was well after that

	did all three things go bad at once? if so i would start to suspect your power supply. Remember 240v can show good with a meter, but when you put a load on it any weaknesses will play up.

	I bet its because it's cold outside and the oil in them is too thick. Try thoroughly warming the cylinder with an air gun before trying to start them. Mine kept blowing fuses on a cold start so I changed the oil for normal compressor oil, I had the same problem. The I changed it for 10w/30 garden machinery oil and its been fine since. I didn't use engine oil as I was worried anything too sophisticated might allow the bores to glaze.

	check your dis board you may have a burnt or loose neutral cable, it will still show 240v at the equipment but they won't work, it may be in the socket or ring main try one on a different socket.
