Hi Changing the fuel pump over today on my merc.Took off big petrol pipe and I had for got to clamp it  Petrol everywhere but it didnt smell like petrol ???more like paint/varnish. Now the car has been sitting for 4.5years but I drained the old fuel out.Iv stuck in about 15ltrs of 95 unleaded so it was the new petrol that was coming out. One of my neighbours asked me what Id been painting Does unleaded smell like that? |

Shouldn't smell like varnish, that sounds like stale petrol smell are you sure you got all the fuel out? Lets say if you syphoned it out they may have been some left in the lines

Mercs are great for hiding fuel. i drained my 190 years ago. then when i scrapped it put a screwdriver few and got another 3 gals of stale fuel. yes it smells like varnish, and it wont be much good on an injection lump. however worked great to fire up my fuel hungry bedford by pouring straight down my holley.
don't worry it should mix up fine, open the boot and jump around a bit to mix, or, just unplug your fuel pipe and join them together!

Modern fuel (post 99) aint all that good at lasting, every spring i have to flush out all the wifes 2stroke machinery cos the fuel looks like pee (first pee of the day colour!) leaf blower, 3 mowers hedge trimmer ect she never remembers to empty them  |

Sorted 4.5 years new fuel pump and filter and she runs. I'm happy!
