i have replaced a few bits on my ratty w210 and have been thinking about making it look a bit nicer! ive used rattle cans in the past to spary things matt black and refub a few sets of wheels and have picked up a lot about preperation and tempratures etc
I'm interested to know whats the next step on from rattle cans?
is it just a case of getting any old compressor and spray gun, topping it up with paint and away you go?

i'd say yes, but you want to make sure you know how to adjust the flow and everything, and remember that it wont be 2pack paint (i think thats what they call it...) basically, it wont have a clear coat or be as durable, but i think it can depend on the paint... mystery machine would know, he's sprayed a few cars

So if i was to go out tomorrow to buy what i need. what would i get?
is it realistic to get a reasonable standard paint job with a bit of practice and the right tools? I'm not expecting pefrection but an ok glossy finish to tart up a turd. i had though more people would be up to this, or is it just not worth while?

You are in Hinckley, so pop over and see us, would be much quicker to show you exactly what you need. look on www.retropower.co.uk to see where we are, but you must be close by!! If our booth is not busy then you could use that for a small £ per hour to cover costs, and then you don't have to buy any kit!

PS yep it is possible to get a decent finish DIY style, just takes much more time. Best if you pop over, we don't bite, and can give you plenty of guidance. its how we all started!!

you want to go a step on from rattle cans, buy a small compressor and a hvlp gravity fed mini spraygun and spray using celly based paints in plain colours not metallics etc. mix the celly 50/50 with high gloss thinners, don't scrimp on std thinners. painting imo isnt that hard. the prep and stopping wibblepoo getting in the fresh paint is that hard part. One bonus of celly is you can flat back and polish up if you get runs or curse word in the paint. Its also a lot safer to use than 2k with regards to diy use. done a few bits on my mx5 the wing, yet to be polished hardtop, mirrors, window surround, headlight vent, rear spoiler yes I realise the rain hasnt done much for my pics. and please note that you wont get it perfect no matter how hard you try, as you wont have pro tools/equipment or pro knowledge. Its never bothered me though as ive only ever had cars worth a grand or so

it looked smaller than that when empty. Hmmmm....
That's about 12'6" wide and a smidge under 25' long. It would be a bit "back to the wall" doing the sides... But... Hmmmm...

DIY painting is one of those things that I've been weighing up but can't decide on.... I have a half decent compressor but doing it on the drive in celly would probably cause hell with the neighbours, what with atomising a load of paint into the air. (I imagine it is pretty messy too)
Trouble is, the cav didn't cost much to begin with and needs a fair bit of bodywork doing to justify a proper paintjob, which just increases the cost even more! However the more work done on the car the more I want it to look shiny! (or at least all one colour and not a scrappy mess)
Complete Indecisiveness!

makes less mess than you'd think but the smell gives you away!
Its sanding the thing down that makes the mess. The dust goes a long way and coats everything.
