1981 was an excellent year, mainly because I was born ;D but also because Bertone had the foresight to have a hand in this, the Mazda MX-81 Aria based on the humble 323. The seats! The dashboard! I'm just wondering where I can buy one and what the rent is like on the real estate in the background. It has pop-up lights, bizarre seats, a dashboard that would look at home on Bladerunner and flat topped arches. Ergonomics probably don't come into the design and I have no idea how you're supposed to steer it but I don't care, it's just too awesome. Audience participation time: Pick a car that was in production, designed or somehow about in 1981, share it with the group especially if there's something that excites you about it.

IIRC, the steering wheel is that black belt thing which slides around the binacle. Must be nice to drive with!

Bertone and the other 80's design houses must have had something pumping out of the aircon or in the water cooler of their studios!! Awesome and wacky in spadeloads ;D How about Pininfarina's Audi Quattro Quartz........ever wondered how they came up with the idea for the Alfa GTV's lights....... check out the 4 rings exhaust lovely

Now I've seen it, I can't believe I've not seen the 4 ring exhaust on a modified Audi. I hope it happens!

Rear view's quite Alfa too. I did see a similar exhaust as a publicity photo for a stainless exhaust manufacturer.

The dashboard! I wonder what they planned on showing on the screen within the steering wheel? Presume it wasn't just a TV to watch Battlestar Galactica?

Citroen really slipped up by not incorporating pop up headlights on the BX, such a neat touch, love the Mazda too, Bertone designed cars the way you wish cars really looked from that era.

Are you sure these weren't designed by the same person. Very similar throughout. Have a VW for good measure. I'm presuming this is built around the Audi, or the other way round.

Thought the Bx was based on the Volvo Tundra? Very similar and also Bertone! They are all a product of the same styling idea/theme from Bertone, the Cit was the only one to actually make it into production though

Bit of random info, that building in the first pic is in Milan..... so rent would be a fair whack I guess!

A year of contrasts. Behemoths like this at the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals (according to the info online at any rate). With tiny little ecological aspirations like this Comuta-Car at the other end of the scale. These guys released the Air X tyre, the first radial tyre for aircraft. While this film poster would have been seen about the place in the UK.

Oh, and it was the last year of production for these little fellows... ...before VW moved on to the new shape.

Yes, yes it was indeed, I wish I'd had the time and money to slam that Polo as it looks so high there but when it had the chin spoiler fitted it improved it alot Miss that car but time was right to move it on to greater things
