195/45 for the stretched look.
215s are the safest probably!

195/50 - bloody stretched, possibly not the safest
185/55 - safer, slightly higher profile, tend to look a bit bulgey because of this

a 185/55 has an almost identical sidewall height to a 195/50.
205/50 or 205/55 would be my pick.
I had 205/55s on some 15x7's and they fit beautifully, not stretched and not too wide, middle of the range sidewall look. Having said that, they do vary dependant on tyre itself, as I've seen others that weren't FM901's and they're not as low profile looking.

Does it not depend on tyre brand also?
I had some michellin on the merc for that stretched look,
Dunno what size they were but they had a pronounced casing to act as a kerb protecter and the dude at the tyre place had the bead blaster up to 350 psi but they just wouldnt seet on the rim,
Well one did but when it was mounted and on the floor it just popped off the rim.
The stretch wasnt about the same as the polo's above,I had to settle a morre sencible trye instead.

235/45R13's are close to ideal tyre size ... don't like overly stretched tyres, they weren't designed to work like that

That Vwortex thread looks well written, but to be honest it seems more opinion than fact - not definitive safety/physics wise.
MadMaxx's Opel looks fine though...I'd happily drive with stretch like that. I think that it all gets scary when really low profiles get stretched. Personally, I'm fine with J-stretch (also known from today as 'classic' stretch - like a set of crossplies over some banded steels!) using tall(ish) tyres, but some of the euro stretching looks a bit scary to me.

175/50s are good if you want it to look streched. if you don't then surely you want 195 or 205 in lowest profile possible.

I'm suprised it's not been clamped down on at MOT's etc. It's putting an unknown factor into a safety critical part just for the sake of posing .... enough said. |
