Would there be a market for a rolling chassis built to the current regs that could be used to build customs on? Clearly will still need testing but bodywork is relativley trivial...
I was thinking of something like a ladder chassis with bolt on subframes for front and rear suspension that could be moved fore/aft as required.
Probably a daft idea, loads of effort and with no market...

Not sure there would be a big enough market for ready made chassis.
Beauford is a ladder chassis from what I remember, looks like it may mean an unfinished kit car resto if I can find one on the cheap.

I'd love to make a car like the pic in my sig - hence why I pinched it ;D If you didn't mind making a trailer-queen, you could just use the suspension off the scim chassis, and make your own... but that'd be kinda pointless, and very dull annoyingly, there seems to be very few chassis' that have the engine BEHIND the front wheels! All the Locost/pickup ones have the wheels either side of the engine - the scim's the only one closest to what that design needs  |

Have to say I would love to build a car like your new sig as well but that chassis would be even harder to find
I agree making a trailer queen would be pointless, never been into them.
So scimitar chassis seems to be the best even if it is not ideal

With a scim, the ID of the car IS the chassis, if you try to replace it with a custom-built one, DVLA/VOSA will say it's not the same car, and demand a BVA test. Comparison.. If I wore a hat, and died - just because you started wearing that hat, doesn't give you my ID.  If he was to make his own chassis, the only cost-worthy way of using it, would be to trailer it everywhere. Too much red-tape to make a hot-rod pass BVA without oodles of pennies |

Too much red-tape to make a hot-rod pass BVA without oodles of pennies I think that Kev (Aceadvice) would take issue with you on that point! If it's built with BIVA in mind then it needn't cost an arm and a leg. Check out some of Rodbuilder's cars over on Rods & Sods too. |

EUREKA!!! You can't alter the chassis by welding/cutting - so you can't extend it.... you also have to use the original suspension.... but - it doesn't say you can't MOVE the suspension. Use all the original front suspension, and leave the chassis totally alone, bar a couple of extra mounting holes.... Unbolt the front suspension, and move it all forwards the desired amount. Redrill new holes to suit the lower arms (which handily enough, are just on a flat surface!) then make a new "cradle" assembely to hold the upper arms, and fit the coilovers on bellcranks, to have them at a much lower angle (helping you get the desired front shape). The new cradle could just be bolted to the original strut-brace holes, and then down to the ARB mounts. Chassis remains essentially untouched, bar a couple of holes, and all of the original suspension will still remain!  Shows the kinda frame needed to support the suspension, with bellcrank mounting points, and where the coilovers would mount. Steering rack would need some small uprights welding to the purple sections, and then the ARB fitting wherever gives you the best packaging Saves you buying a new chassis, and will give you the PERFECT shape!  |
