Went out in the imp earlier and when returning home there was a very nasty noise from the engine,I shut it off to investigate further and couldn't turn the engine over by hand, whipped the head off to find a screw on top of the piston!! It has damamged both piston and head, scrap engine do you think?? and the piston....

If you think you're going to get rid , id risk putting the head back on and trying it. Providing nothing's bent below the piston

Yeah, smooth out and edges to eliminate hot spots and put it back together, gotta be worth a go. I've removed worse pistons from good running engines.

What have you got to lose from trying. Id give it a go and hope for the best
p.s. do you know where the screw came from?

If the cylinderwalls are not deeply scored (doesnt look liek they are), I'd proceed as has been said. Smooth it a bit, new headgasket & go

I can remember burning a hole in the piston of a Suzuki GT 250. didn't have the pennies for a piston so i drilled the hole and countersunk the top, put a csk allen head in and a nut under the CROWN, tapped with a center punch so it wouldn't undo and chucked it back together. It stayed like that for months little more vibration but other than that it was fine

Looking on the Blackberry, so can't see the pics too clearly, but is the damage deep enough to warrent needing filling?
Don't JB Weld do a high temp version they claim can be used inside a cylinder?
Or maybe a little fill with a tig weld?
But also as had been said, if you're ready to scrap it anyway, smooth it off, and go for it!
