If you have the space you could buy a high mileage example for 2p and swap all your low mileage bits into it. You could also do some mods while your at it, turn a bad situation into an opertunity for serious fun (winter project). While your doing that buy a winter car (with good tyres).
Oh and count yourself lucky that you didn't mangle yourself.

86mike If i don't sell it or scrap it and can still afford a winter car, i think i'll do what you said and get another shell, but i have so many plans i'd love to do... like tucking the bumpers flush to the panels, removing the side bump strips and flaring the arches.... if i can afford it, this could be a blessing in disguise

I want as close to £200 as possible, will have a fresh ticket on it for that price. but no tax. Maybe retro fit all the Saxo running gear as its a base model 1 litre on SPI

12 months on something under 1.5 is £130. I do think replacement is the most sensible option here - even if it is your first car - since it seems pobable that the shell has been twisted somewhat. I don't mean to criticise, but I would wager that the moment you felt it start to go you lifted off the throttle - and possibly braked as well - which made the situation worse by causing lift-off oversteer. Unfortunately it's not easy to find out what will happen when you reach the limits of grip in a cntrolled environment in the UK - until you do it on the public road in a I am firmly of the opinion that people should do a skidpan course fairly early in their driving career - it instills just enough instinct to correct it when you get it wrong. In Sweden skid control courses are part of learning to drive - one reason, perhaps, why Sweden produces so many excellent rally drivers... About 6 months after I did a skidpan experience day at Rockingham, I managed to lose control on a bend - there was dew there that I wasn't expecting, and I lifted off a little as well. Obviously I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't done the course, but I suspect that I would have lost it entirely and ended up crashing into the oncoming traffic. Pass plus might help avoid similar situations, but really [holier than thou mode ]it's all about developing a decent attitude to driving: accepting that you are only human and can make mistakes, learning from your mistakes, and trying to avoid situations where a mistake could end in an accident.[/holier than thou ]

pass plus is motorway driving isnt it? i had to drive over 300 miles of motorway in two days, including the m25 in torrential rain. Ive lost control before and learned to keep my foot planted, but i just didnt this time, and like i said, as soon as it saw that grass verge, i just slid, it was all i could do to avoid the tree!
i honestly appreciate peoples understanding, its easy to just see this as 'boy racer almost becomes another statistic'
the strangest thing is that before i we left, i said i wasnt sure i wanted to go out, but decided too anyway. then again, i decided to take the back roads and wasnt careful enough... anyway, I'm definately taking a skidpan course when one comes up!

Tough luck chap. Personally I'd not go the whole winter project yet, get yourself mobile again in something legal and get driving. Don't underestimate the work involved in fixing the old one or swapping bits onto another. Also bear in mind you will have 2 immobile cars most likely for a fair few weeks. Also don't get too attached to a 1.1 Saxo.... I loved my 205xs (First car I bought and paid for) but in hindsight it was dreadful! You never forget your first real car, but this an opportunity to try something else. Good luck

Get some photos up. I bought a VTR with the front banana'd inwards cheaply and an afternoons effort and some scrapyard parts had it back to normal. Rad and fan, grill, headlights, bumper and bonnet all were changed and the slam panel pulled back into shape with ease.... lifting sling around the bent bits and onto a solid post, then some VERY GENTLE reversing pulled it out easily. A little hammer work afterwards got it finished. Its thin metal and not too hard to work.

Hey we all make mistakes (i certainly have when I started driving).. The main thing is your ok and will learn from it.. its all good experience.. About the car.. they are popular but very cheap.. is say best to look on evilbay and see what's bits are selling well.. pull those bits list and sell.. fray Tue shell and what's left. (weigh in cat/battery/alloys/ separate for best price.) Drain the tank (its surprising how much fuel there can be left in what appears an empty tank) Use cash and q bit more and buy next car.. (get something retro.. Si

I'm sure we've all been there at one time or another. I passed my test 28 years ago and went out and bought a '67 Triumph 2000. Yep, 18 years old with a six-cylinder 2-litre missile (or so it seemed at the time). I was lucky (I just blew three engines and two gearboxes in six months....lol), but I look back on some of the stuff I got up to back then in cars and shudder. Chalk it down to experience to draw from in the future, at least it was just a Saxo and not anything decent. ;D

Always try and take positives from something bad- You're alive! Everyone makes mistakes and it sounds like you've learned from it. Break it, make what you can from it and get something else.........I have a nice Austin Metro with long T&T for sale
