Evening all, I am now set on doing an engine conversion into my estate. I have been involved in doing quite a few conversions now mostly for other people. I have heard that when it comes to updating logbooks etc it can be a nightmare with needing to hold a v5 for the donor car, engineers reports, independent motor technicians report (AA, RAC) Insurance validation reports etc etc. Some people seem to have just filled in the engine number, cc etc and had no comebacks just the logbook back with the information updated. Others have had 20 questions? What experiences have you had with it? Any help information appreciated Thanks Adz

if it's tax-exampt, they couldn't give a monkys about what you shove in it - you literally just fill in the numbers, and post it off.
Anything newer, I think they *should* all need a billion bits of paperwork?

I sent off the changed log book with a letter from my local garage "proving" that it was what I said it was due to an inspection. I had an engine plate number though which is the important thing. But I've also heard that it's just as easy to do without a number.
When problems arise is when you start crossing tax change thresholds, they want to know why you are doing it and if it's to fiddle the system etc.
It also depends on who's desk it lands on, whether they are a lazy sod or a rule crazy anti-car person.

Thanks for the input so far guys I was planning on putting a 1.5 isuzu turbo diesel into my 79 1256 chevette estate, figured it's better for me than the 4age conversion i had lined up as its better on fuel and I want to use it daily and lugging parts about. If I get an engine, state the engine numbers etc and get an engineers report is that sufficient? Don't know if its different now they are changing the logbooks to the v5c red ones. Insurance wise they are happy so long as it passes an MOT.

I would expect so yes, just be wary as I think you pass over a tax band there. They may ask for more. Also expect it to take at least a month.

I changed the engine in my kit car (2006) and sent a brief letter saying what I had done, filled in the V5, and took pictures of the new engine in the car and a close up showing the engine number and it came back fine in a couple of weeks.

Tax amount should be the same as its under a 1.6. Ergo why I thought its cheaper than the 4age conversion, not just in fuel costs ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Anyone done one recently? I.e with the red logbook? Was wondering if they changed the procedure.

av not bothered with mine, was 1993cc and is now 1809, my mate tried to get the logbook on his 3ltr capri changed to 1809cc (he is also doing a CA18DET into Capri) and he got the logbook back, unchanged, with a letter saying that the cc is not assosiated with any car, we got it off the log book for his donor s13 haha

Thanks to everyone that chipped in. In summary should be of if I give them all the right info, a engineers repot to accompany etc. But be warey it may end up on the wrong kind of persons desk, then its harder.
