saw a nice one for sale locally the other day and although I'm probably not going to buy it, i would like to own one eventually.
so what are they like? reliable as the mk2s? do they have the same crappy carbs? insurance? any issues?

Pirellis! Not sure of the mechanicals and so such but I must say that does look very tempting.

I had a mk1gx, was very reliable, and 5 speed ;D Good fun to drive too. That looks top dollar to me, but I'm not up on current prices. It does look very clean though. Main thing is rust, check boot to rear pannel and strut tops as well as the usual places.

£1800 seems quite expensive for a Mk1 GTI unless its totally mint and a Campaign model. You can pick up a good condition GTI for around a grand.

i don't think ill be buying that one but once I'm a bit older and insurance comes down (iv already got a stupidly expensive golf and buggy to insure) ill probably look into one. plus that place tends to have higher than average prices i think. although the car looked very good from the outside, cant remember seeing any rust. most of the cars there were either mint or very close
they also had the soft top version as well in black. cant remember much about it but i think it was 1.3k and non gti

Just to point out that although that car has the P-slot wheels it is very unlikely to be a 'campaign' model as it doesn't look to be an A-reg. Some people try to make normal late GTI's look like campaigns to get more cash when selling, depends what you're after as there is no real advantage to the campaign ones anyway but worth noting. Campaign would have an 'EW' in the chassis number, amongst other features. A lot of info, and a good buyers guide on the Mk1 owners club site here: www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/The main thing to look out for is rust, poor accident repiars and general bodywork/chassis bodging in my opinion. All the mechanical stuff is easy enough to fix and parts are available whereas body panels/repairs are hard to get and cost more money. Prices vary widly, cheap ones are generally best avoided from the ones I've seen and when people advertise them as 'mint' and 'original' for less than about £2k, they very rarely are. That said, a nice useable one could be had for less that the one in the pic if you look in the right places. Awesome to drive, very reliable if looked after and won't loose much if any value if kept in good condition - I must get another at some point!

No carb problems as they are Injected... But rusty filler necks can be an issue - the flakes settle in the tank and get sucked into the system, blocking the injectors, causing all kinds of odd running and random misfiring etc. Stu has covered the main points really, rust is the big one as the last ones are 23 years old now I've never understood the Lhasa green premium, it's not the best colour for them IMO! I love mine, wish I could afford to get it back on the road.

The old Golf needs to be back on the road, surely it doesn't need too much fettling to sort it. Give me a shout if I can be of any help, I'd love to see it back in daily use

Give me a shout if I can be of any help, I'd love to see it back in daily use It's nowt majorly mechanical or anything... Purely financial! Money for insurance, tax, MOT, petrol... I have most of the parts I need, but there's no point (for example) putting the new tyres I have on, for it to sit on them without moving... Major life problems/trauma over the past two years... I'm on the mend now but paying heavily financially. Still, it'll be going into storage before winter, where I can give it the TLC it deserves ;D Oooh, looking at the pic... It's deffo not a Campaign cos it's too old, but another quick spot is the centre caps on the P-Slot wheels. Genuine "Campaign" ones have "Pirelli" moulded into them, raised up. The ones off later Mk2 Golfs have smooth caps like the ones in the photo Also, the part number stamped on the rim is different and the gaps between the Ps too, but I can never remember which is Mk1 and which is Mk2 ;D
