Have just ridden back from work in the rain again and got soaked, probably didn`t help that I went through every puddle I could find tho' ;D. The Mini has been off the road for almost 18 months now, so I reckon its time for a new car. I was only going to change the clutch and got a bit carried away . My criteria are: 1) Reliable 2) Stealth 3) Budget of £1000 I was thinking of an Audi 90 20V (a little bland looking but quick as!) What would go and buy?

Oh, no, don't make me rant about Volvos again! I'm getting Repetitive Strain Injuries from writing the word Volvo! ;D ;D Seriously though, for that money, you'd get a Volvo 740, (ouch! my fingers! ) a Lada would cost buttons, but building it up into something rapid might cost a little more unless you can find a good cheap rear wheel drive donor car in a scrappie, a tidy Hillman Imp is very much possible, although don't expect to find a sportier Chamois Coupe or Sunbeam Stiletto, but you could pick up the sports gear for one on the cheap and stick it in a regular saloon, and I'm sure that lot have a thousand better suggestions.

I was thinking of an Audi 90 20V (a little bland looking but quick as!) What would go and buy? Good choice.... quattro is better... a mate had a 90 2.2 and his first comment to me was 'I can see why the fitted quattro' found it very difficult to transfer the power to the front wheels without SERIOUS wheelspin. I had a 90 20v quattro, and a Coupe 20v quattro.... and I'd recommend them..... HIGHLY! Other than that for a grand.... um.... Mk2 Golf GTI? Mk2 Scirocco GTX E30 Bmw 3er?

I was thinking the same about the Mk2 Golf if you don't mind FWD?? Or the 205GTi??
You'd be surprised what you can pick up for that money really.

Good call on the E30 biz: I picked mine up for well under a grand: OK so the mileage is pretty astronomical but it's quick, reliable and not too thirsty, and had FSH. Result!! My advice on opting for one of these: Be careful: there's a lot of tarted up cack out there that's been blatantly clocked, smashed, nailed etc. I looked at loads of rubbish examples before I struck lucky. Also, Ratters: some real good suggestions here too!

It rained again today You've suggested all the cars I was gonna have a look for. I like the idea of a 90 quattro - falls perfectly into the stealth catagory I saw an E30 325i Sport a while back for around a grand - RWD and no traction control ;D There was a Corrado in Autotrader last week for £1k - have always liked the look of those. I'll keep thinking (ouch!)
