they can recognise a sawn off spring when they see one The point is (if you read on from where you quoted) that we don't even care how the springs are cut as long as they act as springs and don't fall out when the car is jacked up..... I understand and agree with that, what irritated me and provoked my comment was "Quite how the tester will be able to tell a lowering spring from one that has been chopped I don't know" Too many people seem to regard MOT testers and dealership mechanics as brain dead spanner monkeys. I once saw a post on some VW forum by a guy who wanted to lower the front of his Beetle, he couldn't find shocks short enough. His suggestion was to cut off the shock mounts completely, so that the MOT tester would not realise that shockers had ever been fitted!! It annoyed me.

His suggestion was to cut off the shock mounts completely, so that the MOT tester would not realise that shockers had ever been fitted!! It annoyed me. You assumed all that from my post? Amazing. What I went on to say was: Both springs would have been cut at some point, so if the cut is clean enough I don't see how it can be proven that it was cut in a garage and not a factory.Which is true. I'll credit MOT testers with a lot of things, but CSI style forensics expertise isn't one of them. I don't think many people could tell where a spring was cut (workshop, spring factory or wherever) if the cut was done properly and finished neatly enough. I mentioned MOT testers because this thread happens to be about MOT legislation. If a baker had cause to inspect my suspension I would defy him to tell where the cut was made too. This isn't some slight on the intelligence of bakers. I said nothing about MOT testers or garage mechanics being stupid and you seem to be making massive assumptions about who I am and what I think about certain people.

I don't think it's important enough to argue over - I think DW just misunderstood your post in the same way you missed the point about the legislation we were discussing Just to recap - cut, shortened, snapped, hand rolled between the thighs of teenage virgins it's all the same to me - if it works and doesn't fall out it passes!

so could i put some black tape over my airbag light? (although i do have the 2ohms resistor and 2 amp blade fuse to fake the airbag being there just haven't fitted it yet and could do without spending 40 quid on having the light put out) will it pass?

for the time being, it will still pass with the light on. Once the changes finally become active, the special notice implies that removing or masking the bulb will result in a pass.

I do have a note of caution, which is that there is still a fail for "airbag component obviously missing" pending in the new rules, but it is entirely possible that it will end up negated by an "unless specialist modified" clause leaving the way clear for aftermarket steering wheels/seats etc in newer cars.
