Right, the time has come for me to part with my rather awesome 1996 Mk3 Lexus LS400. This being the Mk3 means it has less weight and more power than the earlier versions (260bhp as opposed to 240 and about 200Kg less IIRC).
I'd always fancied one of these, and when my Jeep failed it's MOT due to rust last year, it was a good excuse to get one. The main reason was that I wanted something quick, big and comfy for the family holiday to France - a job it performed faultlessly.
Before the trip, I replaced the plugs (iridium NGK - pricey), HT leads (NGK - pricey!) 5w30 oil and all filters (not so pricey!) as I wanted it to be spot on. I wanted to change the cambelt too, but ran out of time before I went, so I changed that when I got back (about 300 miles ago now - I don't use cars much!). Now, the cambelt schedule on these states 90k miles or 6 years (most people neglect to tell you that last bit when their 9 year old cambelt has only done 60k...!). If you didn't know how involved the cambelt change is, click here www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/timingbelt.html - whilst doing that, I changed the coolant, rotor arms and dizzy caps too.
I'd have no problem driving this car anywhere for any distance - as previously said, I drove from Derbyshire to Poole, then from Cherbourg to St Cast - the round trip (including driving around on holiday) was around 1000 miles and fully laden (2 adults, 3 kids, full boot and 3 bikes on the back!), travelling at sensible speeds it averaged over 26mpg.
It comes with a moderately useless private plate - A15 KGT. I insist that people call me Al and I have Krazy Good Times whilst driving it.... Or something - you make up your own!
It is on BSA 18" wheels which are a matter of taste - they've grown on me since I bought it - the spare is a standard full size 16" Lexus wheel. All tyres are good with plenty of tread.
Being 15 years old, it's not absolutely perfect, there are a couple of little dings/scrapes on the body but nothing which detracts from the overall appearance. It was cut, polished and waxed when I first got it with Meguiars stuff too.
Inside is all grey leather (cleaned and conditioned when I first got it).
There's so much stuff included as standard on this car it's ridiculous. My personal favourite highlights are the heated rear seats, electric seatbelt height adjusters and electric headrest height adjusters!!
I'll get some more pics tomorrow when I've washed it, but here's a taster for now - the small pics are from the advert I bought it from....!
Just the Lexus, not the Stratos replica I'm afraid!
